Help I've Got a Whine

As the title says. A deep whine which has got worse/louder in the last few weeks.

It's related to road speed not engine speed. Not specific to accelerating or breaking not to cornering.
Wheel bearing? Prop Shaft? Other?

The Guru (Trevor - UKBlownSS) is too far away from me (South Leicestershire) to pop in for a diagnosis/fix so can anyone suggest a garage to take a look.

If the whine increases with road speed its probably a wheel bearing, on a rear wheel drive car, front would be the preferable one to fix, much easier.

You can normally tell if it's a wheel bearing by jacking up each corner individually and spinning/feeling for play by hand.

Also wheel bearings tend to get louder under cornering on the relevant side.

Could be diff?

Wright Automotive in Hinckley MOT'd my Z28 this year (1st MOT). I have used them for a few years for other cars and would trust them with anything on mine that I couldn't do myself..

Difficult to say Trev. But definitely getting worse. A bearing of some description.

... is it maybe the Diff that just needs an oil change?
Mine definitely had a whine there at around 19-21k √ and oil fixed that :-)

Hi stranger, where ya been? Diff did cross my mind although I don't recall ever changing the oil in any car. Maybe it happened in the earlier days of company cars but wasn't aware.
I'm gonna start with Pat's suggestion of jacking each wheel for play. Then maybe have a go at the diff oil change. After that it's a call to the Hinckley guy.

IF.... you do have a noisy wheel bearing, chances are slim to have any play. You try turning the rear wheel fast enough to hear with the resistance in the diff and see how you get on ! Fronts not a problem. I use microphones hooked up to headphones on all 4 corners to diagnose this issue. Otherwise not always easy. Lets not discount the possibility of the center prop bearing, on the ramp with a stethoscope for that one. Even out of shape tyres can sound like a wheel bearing, seen that many a time, look at the inner tread blocks are they up and down ? . I could fly up and have a look, do you have anywhere where I can land my helicopter ?

If that's for real Trev, yes if you can land in a 20 acre flat field.
