especially since, depending on the size of the deer, it could have easily rolled over the hood and through the windshield thereby increasing the amount of damage done to you.

Really sucks that happened to you. Had a very similar incident with my camaro back in 2011. Caused over 8k worth of damage but mine was fixable. I am in the Army and teach troops how to drive MRAP vehicles. One thing we always teach is if a animal jumps out in front of you do not swerve to miss it or slam on the breaks unless your equipped with ABS. Steer the vehicle and try to stop or slow down if you can. Better to hit the animal. Then again teaching and having it happen are two different beast as I experienced and learned from. Glad you are ok. The car can be replaced.

Swerving to avoid hitting something head on is a natural reaction in my mind, I have done it for this exact reason, to miss hitting a deer. And, as was pointed out in a post, it is possible that a deer can go through the windshield and cause serious injuries to the folks inside. The driver did what he had to do and the most important thing is he walked away from the accident. Perhaps this is one of those situations where a person doesn't know what they would do until they are in that situation, just saying.
Glad that you are ok, and hope that you find a new ride.

The simple fact is that animals are the reason for many deaths each and every year. After I did a quickie google search...I found this from TN...where I had my own run in with a deer. http://tnjn.com/2010/dec/08/an-innoc...l-causes-mill/ An estimated 1.5 million accidents and 29,000 injuries per year from deer alone! Never would have guessed it was this high...but with over 27 million deer in the USA...it makes sense. Never meant to make you feel like you did it on purpose. Sorry if I offended you. |
