Pontiac Fiero - why not bring it back?

So lately I've seen more old Pontiac Fiero's looming about...
why not bring it back?..heres a lil info I found via wikipedia...

Already selling the Chevrolet Corvette, General Motors management and accountants were opposed to investing in a second two-seater sports car. But in 1979, during the oil-crisis, management saw a market opportunity for a fuel-efficient sporty commuter car and design work on the Fiero commenced. To this end, it was fitted with a fuel efficient version of Pontiac's 2.5L 4-cylinder engine capable of 27 mpg (US) (8.7 L/100 km/32 mpg imp) in the city and 40 mpg (US) (5.9 L/100 km/48 mpg imp) on the highway with the economy-ratio transmission option.

The 1984 Fiero was the Official Pace Car of the Indianapolis 500 for 1984, beating out the new 1984 Corvette for the honor.

come on..a 40mpg car that can beat a corvette with certain modifications?..
(given it'd lessen the mpg of course to make those mods)
why did this car only last 4 years?!
with todays technology this would be a freakin beast on the road...
good mpg + a lotta speed..hmm..
am I overlooking something?
probably so.

what's your opinion...?

Well, the Fiero last only 4 years because of some "minor" quality issues. Unless you're a big fan of your car spontaneously combusting. Personally, not something I want for my car.

On top of that, they weren't the safest things on the road. And, you could only carry one passenger OR a briefcase/small suitcase, not both.

A "remade" Fiero would not come back as the Fiero that some may have loved back then. Due to airbag requirements, crash test requirements, etc, it would be a very different vehicle.

Possible? Sure. Likely? No.

so make it a bit more sturdy?, I'm sure by now they could resolve the no cargo room issue.
Sure it'd be different but what vehicle isn't different from its 20 year old predecessor..
it's still a fiero and I think for enthusiasts sake people would still buy it..much like people are going for the 5th gen camaro. as well as bringing in new faces.
despite it being absent all these years people still want it..
and with gas prices only going UP, people are gonna want a good mpg car that can go fast (unlike some of these sluggish low powered pieces of crap)
honestly how safe can some of these higher mpg'd cars possibly be?
the majority of them that I see look like you'd get completely unrecognizably crushed in a highway accident.
where as if something like the crown vic or old caprice were to get in a crash like that, it'd hold up a lot better.
stick a 4 in em.

I think a sturdier fiero would be awesome.

I suspect that crushing isn't the usual cause of injuries/death in accidents, bodily acceleration and impact is. Those things are mitigated by a car that gets crushed (crumple zones, anyone?). It's not about the car holding up, it's about the people. Anyway, you can't argue with results, and today's little tin can cars are safer than large (or any) cars from an earlier era.

Well, unless you get crushed between two 80,000 pound trucks that collide head-on, simultaneously T-boning you from both sides, both running red lights when you had right-of way...but then you're pretty well screwed either way.

Anyway, I'd love to see GM put something like the Fiero on the market again.

What I'm reading (having never really seen a Fiero) seems to be describing what would have been a Solstice/Sky car back in the day....

Looking for another Fiero for my husband (he was an GT of the late 86-87 maybe an 88) for a winter driver

Lol, I've never seen anyone get out of such a tiny car (such as the Miata), but I'd assume it'd be rather hilarious, especially a rico-suave type person

fiero

i thought it was only the 2.8 v6 models that were the fireballs i think the 4 cylinders were ok except imho the 2.5 gm 4 cyl. was junk. it would still be cool if they brought it back.

An updated Fiero would be cool, but it would be for a small market. What GM really needs is an all wheel drive WRX/Evo killer. Like it or not, the tuner crowd is huge right now. If they could build an all wheel drive Cobalt, bump up the ecotec's HP and market it less than 30K, they would sell tons of them.

The fiero was a POS. Its only claim to fame was replacing the beetle chassis as the starting point for most kit cars.
