How much boost is to much?

I'm about to go in the shop for a clutch and I'm planning to turn it up while it's in there. ECS 1500 so should be around 12 pounds with the restrictor plate out and adding an aux pump to run e85. Anyone see any issues or concerns with turning it up? What boost levels do you all have on sbe? Or should I leave it at 8 pounds and just get the tune for e85 without turning it up?

I'm at 10psi with my setup. I wouldn't feel safe going any higher than that on my STB. If I were you I'd just leave it and see how much power you pick up from E85.
But that's just my personal opinion. I know some guys run higher, but the risk just gets even more elevated. Who's tuning it?

Planning on having Howard (Redline) tune it.

My 2 cents?
Go look at what a short block costs. If that that amount of money is acceptable to you, then turn it up. If the number upsets you, keep it at 8psi and on e85. I took my stuff apart after running 8lbs for a short time and found cracked cylinder walls and decided to rebuild then. Can't say if that was from me or age of engine. Some people have been able to beat on these engines all day and do incredible things while others such as myself found the limits very quickly. Just be prepared is all I'm saying. My friend is at 12? lbs with SC and e85. He seems to be doing fine for now.

I assume you have stock internals except for cam? I would think you will be getting pretty close to the limit if you push it to 12psi. It certainly could work with a great tune. How long is anyone’s guess. Things to look out for would be IAT’s. Temps do go up when you turn up the boost. Make sure your intercooler is up to the task at those levels.

The E85 will add a lot too. I still remain incredibly impressed with what E85 can do when I switch back and forth from 93 and E85. The timing you can pull off with E85 is a real game changer. And fun!

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.

Well speaking from experience, do it if you have money to spare for a new engine. If u dont, stay conservative. Mine went kaboom, and a new iron block/heads etc im here. Boost levels doesnt really matter. Doesnt matter who builds and tunes it, shit can go sideways real quick. Wrist pin/ rod or whatever can say "see ya later".

Good stuff. I've talked to him a few times. I'm actually planning on either doing a build there at his shop or just buy a zl1.
You should be in good hands though. Definitely let us know how it turns out!

What is this expression “too much’…??? lol….

Send it… Provided you can comfortably afford a long block… I have a trail of broken parts down a certain racetrack… but I went butt wild on the boost… I did accomplish my goal, but I tore up some parts…

Thanks everyone for the advice, maybe I'll keep it at 8# and start planning for a drop in kit down the road.

I am at 715rwhp @10psi with an AGP twin turbo kit on E85. The tuner didn't want to go any higher for fear of popping the motor. For kill mode I run 14psi not often but it does happen. I have been at the HP for 8 years stock motor. Been thinking about a cam now.

my 5th gen is still kickin

pump gas ca 91 500 whp @ 7-8lb's 76mm turbo

i dont know how many years its been but this car was setup and tuned when the huron single turbo first came out.

im going to btr stage 2 turbo cam, go e85 and get a looser converter. i "think" it will do 600-620 whp at the same psi with a cam and ethanol. just a fun street car on rims.
