Some cars fall harder than others. Go look at what happens to Maseratis. Brutal.

When used 6th gens are popping up in low to mid 30s with a better chassis and similar performance. ZL1 still one of the quickest ways to 6-700hp though.

Personally I’m of the opinion they will keep going down. 6ths will drive 5ths down. I think I could see zl1 having a plateau 20-25k like 03-04 cobras had back in the day for rarity and crazy hp potential.
Any time a new generation comes out, depreciation will hit the previous gen harder. It's pretty stabilized now, I think they will float around $30k with good miles for the foreseeable future.

$30k for a 5th ZL1 vs 6th SS is a no brainer. It's hard to like the 6th Gen

Mileage and mods is what killed you. No questions asked. Everybody wants to spread the "They're meant to be driven, drive them everywhere" mentality. That's fine. Just be prepared, your 30,000+ mileage car is not going to sell like one with 5000 or less.

I don't think you gave it away at $30,000.

See I would disagree and if enough market tips to 6th it will drive zl1 down further. If its straight SS I could see the argument, but still better chassis, better interior, tech, less weight, DI advantages.

If 1LE gets to same price(and its close now) Id take it hands down over most 5th gen zl1's. Get the brakes, mag ride, zl1 elsd, npp, recaros. Lapped Laguna faster than the Z28. Most ZL1 guys Ive seen are still trying to get mid 30k's which is direct competition with these.

And dont take this the wrong way, I just like chatting about it. I was drooling over a ZL1 and a 6th Saturday night at a local cruise in.

I have the same thought. Doesn't make sense.
comparing what they cost new vs what the first ones can be bought for now they dropped a lot. this HP increase will have them sinking more.

Aside from the chassis/weight, the rest of the 6th Gen "advantages" are subjective.

I just bought my Camaro a few months ago, so I was in the current market with a mid 30's budget for one or the other. I looked at the SS/1LE, but for a variety of reasons decided to find a 5th. I ended up with my 3k mile car for under $35k.

If you include ADM, sure. But that varied by dealer.

I agree, prices on used 707hp Hellcat's should start dropping

KBB value is about 10% over inflated so that is some of your loss. If you want an accurate value you have to use NADA or Blackbook. I traded my '13 M6 vert ZL1 a year ago and only got $32k. I probably could have sold private for $35k but why go thru the hassle when you just have to use the diff to pay the extra sales tax on the new vehicle?

OP, your post is missing some critical details..what did you pay for it? If you lost 31k, would that mean you paid 61k used? I hope you are not factoring in mods & upgrades, they can actually cause depreciation. Most people see an ice box in a car and run like hell..

Cars are not an asset, they are a liability. Most people forget the enjoyment and function the car brought them when they go to sell it. They depreciate.

Also, I think selling cars is an art, what day to post, what time of day, types of photos, the write up, the geographic market you are selling in, all can affect the sale.

Sorry for your loss, but don't blame the car. Still the best all around performance car at that price point.

I traded my 2012 for $32k in 2017 with 28k miles and got $10k off a new truck. $32k was KBB value. I bought it in 2014 for $42k with 10k miles. I thought I did great considering that I thought about buying a brand new 2014 SS for the same price. When I traded it in I checked KBB on the SS and it was less. Basically I would have broke even on the car loan with the SS but I walked away with over $10k on the ZL1.

The key to selling (and buying) is patience. There is a butt for every seat. I think I paid a couple grand more than I could have if I were more flexible on options but when it's the right one I will keep it for a decade or more. As long as I don't hit a deer or get rear ended, the loss will be acceptable.

Your vehicle is worth 10-15% less than whatever you find on Cargurus, if you're lucky. KBB is irrelevant, you need to be looking at comps. Low mileage 13 ZL1s can be had all day off a dealer lot for $30-31k with verts $2k more. Private party sales are in the mid to upper 20's.

I actually think 5th gens in general have come up in value a little if you can believe it. 2 years ago I had a 2010 Aqua Blue SS with 13k miles and perfect condition but wanted a C7 Corvette. I desperately tried selling the car myself and couldn't get an offer above 18,500 for it. I traded it in and bought the vette. 2 Years later I decided I'm not a vette guy, so I sold my C7 and decided to get back into a 5th gen camaro. I looked for months for another low mile ABM (There's a want ad here I posted, along with my own nationwide search) and came up with nothing but a few modded cars that have asking prices of 25K or more. That's well over 5k more than what they were selling for 2 years ago, and now with twice the miles.

My theory for this is that at the time, the 6th gen Camaro was just coming out, and I think that's why 5th gen values were so low. After they were out for a year or so people realized they weren't worth twice the price of what they could get a nice 5th gen for, so people didn't trade their old Camaros for new ones, and many who were shopping for their first Camaro ended up buying a nice used 5th gen instead of a new 6th gen that was close to 50k. I think the 6th gen Camaro has actually kept the values of 5th gens UP rather than hurting their value.
