A few years ago before I bought a winter beater, I was forced to drive my then-new BMW 335i sedan through 3 Iowa winters and yeah, our roads are soaked with salt brine. At the time, my garage wasn't heated either, so I bought one of those round trash-can-looking LP fuel 60,000 BTU heaters and religiously SUPER CLEANED the car top and bottom at least once a week. It never showed any signs of corrosion - which I contribute to the constant washing.
Another quick option I would use is fill a bucket 1/2 way full of hot soapy water (cover it with a towel for transport), go to a HEATED coin-op self serve car wash, blast off the top layer of crud, then bucket wash it, then rinse. The key is wash, wash, wash! You'll be fine.

Galvanized body panels will still rust (ask my '97 Cavalier). It may take longer depending on how well the manufacturer's galvanizing process is, but over time cars are still prone to rust.

They will still rust. They won't rust through a body panel, but the parts under the car do get corroded. My previous vehicle was a pickup truck that I bought brand new. After three years, I hated to look under it. That was with regular washings. The brine gets into every nook and cranny.

Beater, baby! Helps keep the mileage low. An extra car is almost always a win. Beaters are cheap.
Here's a shot from last March of my two cars. Guess the beater. While the Aveo is a poor excuse of a car, I kind of love it as a commuting car and a winter beater. The 30-35 mpg isn't so bad either, though should really be higher for such a car. Now, I'm a believer in only putting it into storage for three months. Dec-Feb. That keeps it away from most of the salt but I wash it tons when / if it sees salt. |

^Yea beaters are almost a given with these, but it is a luxury.
