Having your car inspected, cost etc?

In the UK if you buy a new car it doesn't need any inspection until its 3 years old and then its every year after that, unless its really old then eventually it becomes exempt.

This test includes emissions, tyres, brakes, lights, suspension, etc etc and lasts about an hour and costs £55 [$68.95] and if it fails it costs half that again when you take it back within 14 days with any repairs done.

My friend who is a current MOT tester asked me what you do for anything similar in the US, is it yearly, thorough, how long does it take and how much?
I told him it would vary but he just wanted some idea.

Same here, our 2018 Camry is good until 2020 then its $27 a year in our area since we have emission on top of safety otherwise it would only be $7 plus the registration which is another $67 or so. After 25 vehicles become exempt for emissions but you still need the safety inspection or at least in Texas, then you have California............

In Massachusetts, it's $35 annually.

While there is no longer an exhaust sniffer test, there must be no error codes.

For older cars, the only emission requirement is no smoke. However, no car is exempt from safety requirements, including tires, brakes, lights, wipers, steering, and there can be no exposed sheet metal edges such as rust holes or loose trim.

No emmissions, no inspections, in this part of New Mexico. Quite nice actually. I’m Virginia where I grew up and my family still lives we had both as well as personal property taxes that required a stick on the windshield next to the inspection sticker. Don’t miss any of that.

Nothing in Michigan. They tried emissions a few decades ago but it crashed and burned. My assumption is that all the corruption that came along with it made it not worth the while. Michigan is weird in that we have some of the worst vehicles on the road but some of the highest speed limits - 75 in some areas and 70 in many urban areas. We take our driving rights seriously in this state.

Trivia question - We also only have one toll road in the entire state. Where is it?

Hard to believe here in the banana republik of California - where you only have periodic electricity, we don’t have mechanical inspections, only smog every two years. The first 5 on a new car are exempt.

I think it's $42 here. Requires yearly. No smog sniffer but a check engine light is automatic fail. Re-inspections are free if you go to the same shop, $10 at a different shop.

Yearly safety inspection here in Texas is $14.50. $7 at the inspection station and $7.50 at the registration. You have to get the vehicle inspected before you can pay and get your license plates.
Some counties around the big cities also require the emissions testing.

In rural Nevada, pretty much everywhere except Las Vegas, no inspection at all. Do what you want to the vehicle, no holds barred.

No inspection or emissions here in Wyoming. As well, since we don't have a state tax they get it out of you when registering a vehicle. My 2006 Silverado is still $230 a year to register, and will most likely remain that price, since they calculate based off of factory cost. That's when I miss my 65' Beetle, less than $20, haha!

It all depends on the state or locality. Some states/cities have no inspections, some do, and some states don't but some of their respective cities will.

Here in Florida, we have nothing. No emissions or inspections. It is a modding paradise. Some of the stuff you will see driving the roads here legally will make your head spin.
