Oil Changing Question

I just recently got a 2011 2lt Camaro. I was talking to some people and they said I should change my oil at 1000-1500 miles. I told my dad about this and he was asking what was the point of doing this? I really could not answer the question so I was wondering if anyone could answer this question for me?

Thanks,
Scruffy90

My father works as a mechanic at the dealer where I bought mine and he strongly believes in doing this. He said he likes to see the oil after some driving to make sure there is nothing in there that shouldn't be, and since I wanted synthetic in there anyway he went ahead and changed mine at 1100 miles.

some people think that you get shavings from all the new parts in the engine rubbing together for the first time that end up in the oil pan. Some people see it on the first change, some people don't.

personally, i went ahead and did it just to be safe. didn't see anything to write home about. and like Sassy said, i just would rather have synthetic in.

Is this a new car? If so yes change the oil at 1500 miles ad the engine is in its break-in period and tends to shed a bit of metal. If the car is not new save your money most new cars can go between 5-7500 miles depending on whether or not you use synthectics. I am not sure if you car has an oil life monitor but you could also use that as a guide.

There's no reason not to, unless it's going to be a financial hardship. A new engine makes metal. I think it's good to get the metal out of the oil after you've driven it about 1000 miles.

Besides that, it's a good excuse to get under the car. It's sort of like consummating the purchase.

I changed my at 500 and at 1,500 miles. I ran my oil though one of those paper funnels with a filter when I changed the oil and the amount of metal shavings that it caught at 500 miles was unbelievable. At 1,500, these was still a little but not much.

I also changed my rear differential fluid at 1,500 for these same reason and it sure needed it.

Scruffy90, CONGRATS on the new ride......and like most people on the site will agree, change it.....the number of miles will change from one person to the next, but doing it early for the forst one is highly recommended.

oh and BTW......Welcome to our happy little corner of the net, and to Camaro5. There is a BIG fridge on the back porch with anything you can think of in it...help yourself...of course only take what you can LEGALLY have. Make yourself at home on one of the big fluffy couches, kick your shoes off, put your feet up on one of the tables, yes we are allowed to do that, mom's and wive's here don't care....and take it easy.

oh...btw....every once in a while a food fight breaks out...so you may not want to wear nice clothes here.

Welcome!!

I just did my first oil change last night on my new car.....1600 miles on it. At my friend's recommendation, I went with Mobil1 fully synthetic 5W30 oil. When I changed the oil filter, you should have seen all the metal filaments from the new engine. I just felt that I would change it right around 1500 miles cause that's the number that the owners manual kept throwing around as the break-in mileage, you know, the number that you need to baby the new engine up to

Had my oil changed at 500 miles. Lots of metal. Had my transmission fluid changed at 1500. It looked like silver metallic paint.

How many times have you seen an engine wear out from changing the oil too often? How many worn out from not changing it enough? (Lots). Oil is cheap, especially if you do it yourself, which is a snap on Camaros, engines are not. Get the rear end fluid changed in a couple thousand miles. I had mine done at 5,000, and they said it was VERY dirty..far more than they would expect. ( I was not going to mess with the rear end fluid myself, no floor jack)

engine oil, differential fluid, manual tranny fluid all changed at 1500 miles. all had signs of initial metal wear-in debris

I can repeat what others have said. I changed my oil at 500 miles. When I emptied the filter it looked like liquid gold glitter from the metal in it. Did it again at 1500 and didn't notice anything.

Also, changed the the differential fluid at 1500 miles. It didn't seem bad. But right in the owner's manual it says if driven competitively that the diff fluid needs to be changed at 1500 miles. While I don't officially 'drive competitively', no one has out-accelerated me from a light yet.
