Automatic trans - Switch gears while driving without damage to gears?

I know this question maybe pointless in this age of cars since most cars help prevent you doing damage to the transmission

But basically can I switch from lets say D to M with a automatic transmission while the car is driving so I can pass a slow person and have my engine roar in sport mode.

I never felt the need to move a gear in an automatic car before in my current ride (07 Impala) the gears are D 3 2 1 and I havent used any but D.

What I am trying to inquire about is hard to type online but hopefully my question is able to be read, but I do not own a Camaro yet before you flame me for not knowing my car lol.

You can't go from D to M
You have to first go from D to S , the use the paddles at the wheel , and go to M , right hand shifts UP ,left one shifts DOWN
And no , you can't hurt the trans by shifting in to just about everything from anything , if the car can't andle it , it will show on the SCREEN , shift DENIED

It's all the the owners Manual

Yes! You can switch into manual mode at any time. In fact, on the SS's you can switch into manual mode just by touching the paddle shifter without actually moving the gear selector.

Yes you can with no issue. if you try to drop into too low of a gear you will get a shift denied message on the DIC.

Just leave it in M. I did when I had my old 2LT. It stayed in sport mode at all times. Downshift when you want to get in the high RPMS and hold the Upshift (right paddle) to switch back to automatic mode, it takes about 2 seconds to activate.

Sure you can. While in drive you can use the paddles to shift, no need to go to sport mode unless you intend on holding the gear.

When doing it in D the car will shift back to D once you have maintain a consistent speed for period of time.

I do it all the time to pass left lane idiots.

In 2010 and some 2011's you cant go D to M, you have to be in Sport to activate tap shift

On mine I have to move the shifter down to get paddle mode.

I make my pass then put her back in drive.

I've been using the TAP shift feature a lot lately, my exhaust sounds so much meaner....

You won't break anything. The car will prevent you from imploding anything.

Thank you for answering my doubts. I do this all the time. My uncle thought I would mess up the transmission.
