42mpg holy moly!
42 mpg what a surprise had it on cruise control most of the time.
Actually it was 38-39 mpg most of the time still awfully good. I bit better than my Pontiac gran prix which was 34-35 mpg. |

That's ultra impressive!
I thought that you would have had the turbo 4, but I see that you have the V6. And at that low of miles, it's not even broken in yet! |

42 mpg in the last 50 miles. What was it for the last 400 or 450mi whatever the other display setting reads?

Easily attainable on a highway for stock V6 or I4. Especially when your cruise control is set to 63. Still the mileage capability of the non-SS platforms is really awesome. Only had to fill up twice from NH to Bowling Green, KY for CamaroFest 7 last summer.

I think I got 35 on my SS. I did set the cruise to 55. I would have hated growing up in the 70s!!!

However, I have you beat, I did 49 MPG on my road trip to California. Contrary to popular belief, setting the cruise control and driving at 45 - 55 MPH does NOT get you the best gas mileage, infact you are actually wasting a crap load of gas holding those speeds (it actually requires more effort for the car to maintain these lower speeds than higher speeds like 70 and 80.) First you're practically lugging 8th gear, second you waste fuel because you're not driving in anticipation of the road (hills, curves, ect) but singling your car out only to a single speed when other speeds may be far more optimal given certain conditions. If you can keep it below 1800 rpm's consistently you will get some great freeway mileage for sure even with the V8's in these cars but anything above 2000 rpm consistently will kill your average mpg.

I have owned a '79 L-48 Corvette for 30 years that I bought in '87 with 22K miles on it. Yeah, this was indeed the smogged down years. That summer I checked the mpg on it (350 4bbl, 350 turbo auto, 355 rear end, registered at a giant 195 horses from the factory, which was pretty quick for '79!). It was getting 13.7 mpg on 93 octane. Now the catalytic converter is long gone and it breathes much better thru straight duals exiting thru turbo mufflers. Those were not the days, but 30 years and growing, I love the vette and get compliments on it very often. P.S. I have never checked the mpg since.

They actually have a good calculator at this site for determining mpg at speeds. https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.jsp
One of the actual pretty decent government calculators. |
