wow. I read somewhere before (might have been here) about "screens across the dash". From that view, that is not far from the truth.

You won’t hear anything on that until after the proposal is put before the general membership, voted on, and approved.

Yep. UAW has chosen to remain on strike until the proposal is voted on.

Under the proposed contract Detroit-Hamtramck will remain open to build a future electric truck and van.

They know they have GM in a bad spot because it’s right at the C8 launch. Don’t be surprised to see them push for even more.

My understanding of the whole thing is that the union leadership was much more interested in the strike than the rank and file. If so, it'll probably get ratified easily.

There was a lot of rhetoric when this all started that they wouldn't approve anything without Lordstown.

Now that D-Ham's been saved and all these dollar signs are in the UAW's faces I'm guessing they'll forget their brothers and sisters in Ohio.

I thought all the brothers and sisters in Ohio had been offered relocation and happily took up employment at other plants? Or was that another management fairy tale?

Last I heard a good number had been transferred to other plants.

Lordstown's been a dead man walking for years now anyways, I'm actually surprised it took this long to shut it down. The plant can only build one type of product and that makes no sense in today's manufacturing world.

Management never said that everyone was getting a job at another plant.

Yes, there was an offer to relocate employees (including cash to cover moving expenses) but I'm not 100% sure that it was a blanket offering for every single employee. Certainly it was not accepted by everyone. Many took retirement, others simply decided to not uproot their lives. Overall, the take rate seems to be under 50%, for the workers who were on the last remaining shift (pretty sure the offer did not extend to workers from other shifts who had already been laid off).

I am in hopes that all of this is settled sooner than later and people get back to work.

With that being said, I can see why GM decided to shudder US plants and move jobs out of the country. From a business standpoint, it makes perfectly logical sense. Why would you want to pay a US Union worker $30 per hour to attach a rear view mirror, when you can pay someone in Mexico or Korea $30 per day to do the same thing? From GM's standpoint, the advantages of removing the Union from the equation are quite clear.

No doubt about it. If you want to make $20 an hour to sling burgers at a fast food joint, don't be surprised when robo burger and payment kiosks show up at the dock.

I was mad at GM for building the Blazer in Mexico, but I get it unfortunately.

Let's hope this agreement doesn't further drive up the costs for the rest of us.

In a perfect world, GM would build everything here, but this isn't a perfect world, and what some people seem to fail to realize is that GM is a business that needs to generate profit for its shareholders, not operate as a charitable organization.
