I see GMs in trouble with the power steering on some cars, but not the Camaro.

Not yet...... Ouch...... More added to the list yesterday, now it's well over 2.5 million cars, and GM has already produced documents stating "it costs too much to fix". Oh Boy, the Lawyers are going to make $$$Millions$$$.

In view of the numerous recalls on many models involving ignition and steering. I think GM or even the chief engineer of the zl1 model should issue a statement about the power steering failures on the zl1. I want to be reassured that I am not endangering my family or myself especially when we are talking about a performance car. I want all the components on the zl1 in working order before I go back on the track for this summer !! Do we really need injuries or death before this issue is taken seriously and thoroughly ?

Watched the CBS News yesterday. Another 1.5 million. Malibu's and Pontiac G6. This time Power Steering can go out. So now its way over 2.5 million on the list. And the evidence doesn't look good: 2001 problem identified, 2002 GM approves even though it Does Not Meet GM Specifications. Inquiry opened in 2004 and closed in 2005. GM concluded: Fixes take too long and COST TOO MUCH. NO SOLUTION REPRESENTS AN ACCEPTABLE BUSINESS CASE.

They have that in writing. Seriously, GM screwed up Big Time. Costs too much......no acceptable solution...... Loss of steering on a racetrack...... Wow, this could explode in their face, I agree, they should make an official response to this problem.

Since the main (and possibly only) reason for EPAS is to achieve mpg targets and/or allow carry-forward of credit, perhaps the mpg standards should be relaxed by however much EPAS is supposed to provide as benefit. For at least as long as it takes to eliminate these problems.

Part of the blame belongs with the arbitrary regulation, so part of at least any interim fix should be drawn against that source.

this is one of those things that will play out over time. some manufactures went to the tech earlier than others. Most of them have had some issues.

Time will tell if this type of system is just not quite as reliable in the first design cycle as hydraulic assist or it is design or supply chain related.

One thing I don't like about electical vs mechanical systesm is electrical systems are much more prone to intermiten problems which are much harder to track down sometimes.

On a hydraulic system I could drive a car in a failure mode I have not tried yet on an EPS equiped car. with those systems they were very easy to troubleshoot usually (I do have one story of a resivoir with a inbeded filter you can't access that handed me my a$$ ha ha) these new system I have only worked on one 2005 malibu and it was intermiten and the car got traded before I was confident the problem was 100% fixed. Happed twice right at startup on my Mommy's car ha ha. once you would start trying to track down the issue it would just work again. the second time I just cleaned everthing and it ran fine after that but they didn't keep it much longer.

my 2000 ss hydraulic power steering worked amazingly well, Why complicate a good reliable system with electronics. What will be the condition of these EPAS for those who keep their camaros for 20 or 30 years ?? From my past experience with cars, once the electrical systems start failing its time to prepare for a new car. Hopefully these high tech gadgets dont make life complicated for collectors.

I am confused about the info in your post. It looks like you have combined the EPS recall and the ignition switch recall. Most of the info you posted I can only link to the ignition recall, but you only talk about the EPS problem.

1.3m cars for electric power steering: http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/...?showmenu=true

2.2 m cars for ignition switch: http://money.cnn.com/2014/03/30/auto...rs-recall-faq/

Some of the numbers conflict because some reports are for worldwide and some are for U.S. only. Also some vehicles are on both recalls.
The question is what is going to happen since most of this happened before the bankruptcy and the bankruptcy laws protect them from actions prior to the bankruptcy. I wonder why the Camaro wasnt added to the EPS recall?

Update
Brought my ZL1 with the power steering failure light being displayed. The service manager came and told me that they need to replace a gear. The gear has to be ordered from Gm and I should have the car fixed in a few days.

I'll try and get a hold of the mechanic and find out what this gear is and let everyone know. Hopefully this solves my power steering problem.

Picked up my ZL1 last night from my dealership, they had to wait for some parts to come in. So this took about a week, but the mechanic was calling me up almost daily.
They found the power steering gear assembly to be faulty and replaced it under warranty.
As far as actual part replaced here's what was listed.

2 11589280 Bolt 8.900 Y
1 19299774 Connecto 2.530 Y
1 22987672 Gear 6.508 Y

It's good to have the car back home my neighbors were asking where it was? Time to test drive and have a big grin . I'll keep my fingers crossed that this solves the problem.

Oh and I want to say thank you to my Chevy dealer for keeping me well informed on the progress on my car.

Hey guys.

Just had the PS issue happen to me with 3 days and 170 miles on the new 2SS Convertible. Completely bone stock. I don't even have tint yet lol.

Anyway, I was driving down the road in perfect conditions at about 45 mph. Possibly going around a slight bend. The power steering shut off, the service power steering message came up, and the brake, ABS, and traction lights all came on. The steering was more resistant than normal, but not terribly so.

When I got home, I turned off the car immediately and restated it the error and lights were still there. The next morning I got up to bring it to the dealer and it was back to normal. (of course). Have it at the dealer right now anyway.

I'll post an update if I get anywhere.

Also, is there a non ZL1 specific thread on this somewhere?

At 13K miles, my error has never returned through many laps at VIR etc. I never took my car to the dealer either. Many cars get this early error, and it clears never to return.
