That's good news, because we'll need it. EVs have the controls and conceptual design in place. They work....but the ranges they work at are still unacceptable in many situations, and that's what we'll need next if everyone's goal is to replace the ICE.

I knew the hype for the Tesla model 3 was/is (at this point) overblown, and Tesla has always had quality issues with the cars, but this article really brings some of the things to light.

http://www.latimes.com/business/auto...218-story.html

There's a scathing 7 minute video if you really have some time to spare, but just a few of some of the quotes from the article that grabbed my attention:

"Tesla started making the Model 3 last July. Chief Executive Elon Musk at one time forecast the company would achieve a rate of 5,000 per week by the end of 2017, or 260,000 a year. From the car's introduction in July through December, however, only 2,685 Model 3s were manufactured."

"Quality complaints are expected with any new car. But longtime automotive engineer Sandy Munro, whose firm tore down a Model 3 for a detailed inspection, said the quality problems are like "something we've never seen before, not since like the '70s or something"

"The way they did the gaps on this car are like, you can see them from Mars," he says in the video. "This thing is a miserable job...After the video was shot, Munro said, he found other problems, including "wires to nowhere" and rear-door insulation that was installed backward. "I'd never seen that before," he said."

"Although the company still advertises the $35,000 price on its website, a Model 3 can't be had for less than $49,000 and, with the Autopilot self-drive system and other options, can easily exceed $60,000."

I wish some of the Tesla/Apple Die hards I know would watch that lol. They would still brush it off as no big deal.

I'm curious if this is the result of using the same harness for everything. An example I can think of is on the 5th gens: being able to plug the console gauge cluster (from the 2SS package) into the 1SS' center console because the wiring was already there.

could be, but it might be different if there is an unused connector vs unused wires

That was what I was thinking, and honestly it probably isn't an issue for the average consumer who isn't going to dismantle the entire car. Without having seen the tear-down video, I'd also be willing to bet that most of the issues found probably won't be found by consumers who aren't "car people."

Tesla will be fine for the foreseeable future unless the folks that pre-ordered the Model 3 start demanding their deposits back en-mass. Not because its a lot of money (its 'only' half a billion dollars or so, Tesla manages to lose 5x that in a typical year), but because it represents a loss of confidence among Tesla faithful. And if they aren't on board anymore, I doubt they're going to find many others willing to put up with their BS either.

Telsa is having to recall almost half of the vehicles it has put on the road? Musk has lost 17% of his fortune because of this recall? The stock has tanked 21% so far?

Tesla hit 2k Model 3s/week.

Still short of their delayed goal.

And for all the things to recall for....

Because Tesla is out of funding options, AND they're "robbing peter to pay paul", as it were with advance deposits for cars and trucks not even in production, yet...they are setting themselves up for a very scary future.

In my opinion, they weren't ready for primetime, and Musk let his ambition get ahead of the company's abilities.

WOAH!

As I've beens saying for a while now.....this is all too quick. We are attempting to mimic human thinking (and the roadway systems we've come up with by our thinking) with a series of simple cameras, sensors, and algorithms. Without dedicated beacons or an advanced, shackled AI...it's going to take more than a few years to get this down!
