Need some help, Camaro 5! Need dealer repair advice...

Don't know if anyone has any advice to offer but here's the situation:

My sister and her family live in MI. They are driving out here (leaving Wednesday) late next week for my other sister's bridal shower/ wedding (San Diego.) She is the maid of honor. They (my sister and her husband) have three kids including an infant, and the power steering on their Aviator went kaput today (leaking fluids, etc.) The dealership there is telling them that the part may arrive by Wednesday (the day they're leaving) but if it doesn't they may need to get a rental. The coverage she has for the rental doesn't cover anything larger than a Focus, which they CANNOT use for the cross-country trip with everyone's luggage, wedding stuff, and the kids. They are really hard up for money also (who isn't?), so having to pay themselves for a larger rental for nearly two weeks could be a barrier to them not being able to come at all.

Is there ANYTHING we can do? Any way to ask the dealer to rush the part and the repair? Would the dealer give them a loaner for them to take cross-country? ( I already know the answer to this one, btw, but I figure it can't hurt to try at this point.) I know it's always a sob story when a car breaks down quickly but this is different-- my sister will only be married this once (I sincerely hope!). I don't want them to miss it; or any of the other special things that go with it.

Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks everyone

Jeez, you'd think they could get a dealer courtesy car. Pretty piss poor if they don't.

I have never had a problem getting a courtesy car, and especially considering the special circumstances for you, I can't see why they would get turned down.

My concern is that they then would have to drive this courtesy car cross-country... I don't know if the dealer would be too happy about that. (2300 miles each way). But that's part of what I was trying to find out...

Well you could also look at it this way.........Michigan to California round trip is about 4500 miles give or take, at least when we did Detroit to Palm Springs over Christmas. Add a bit more to San Diego and back and you are at 5,000 miles.

The Aviator would probably get 20 mpg at the very best. That would be 250 gallons at about $3/gallon. Looking at 750 round trip.

So go rent a Chevy Malib with a 4 cylinder. Awesome car, btw, we just bought one for Mrs. Number 3. Now you are talking 33 mpg or 150 gallons at $3/gallon or $450 round trip.

Does the $300 savings in gas help justify renting a little bigger car than the Focus? Could substitute a Ford Fusion............if you had too. Same mpg equation.

Just an idea.

If vehicle is under warranty, a rental will be payed for until the repair is completed.

If whatever coverage limits rental size, pay for an upgrade.

Offer to pay for next day air on part if not under warranty, otherwise they should issue a rental, and next day air the part.

If dealer is not cooperative, take it to another one.

Not a bad thought; I do know with two kids 7 and 5 and an infant, plus all their luggage and wedding stuff they are going to need a much bigger car than a Malibu, probably another SUV which wouldn't be much of an improvement on the mileage end. But worth considering nonetheless.

Did you get another car Number 3? Avatar is yellow now!

Good idea too; I'll ask her to ask the dealer about the air shipping. They don't seem to be very cooperative though from what she told me so far but I'm still trying to get more info.

Keep 'em comin, we can use all the help we can get.
Thanks!
