My buddy got a ticket...this is crazy

Just got a call from my friend, and he got a ticket earlier tonight.
He was driving on the highway earlier today and just following the traffic flow. Suddenly he sees some police light flashing behind him. Pulled over, and the officer gave him a ticket for 61mph in a 60mph zone. It was not expensive but still, I think it's ridiculous...

I mean seriously? 1 mile over speed limit?
(and yes he did text me a pic of the ticket and it was 61 in 60 zone)

I'd take that B.S. to court and fight it!!! Did he make sure to thank Barney for the ticket?

Wow. That officer must have been either really bored or a mustang owner. Haha. I once got one for 58 in a 55 and I thought that was bad.

If the judge has any sense, and most don't, he will throw the case out.

I am willing to bet if that is on the ticket and it is the only ticket he got any court would throw it out.

He said he haven't got any ticket in the past one and half year, and he's gonna bring it to court for sure

I'd go to court & protest as well. Ask for calibration records of the radar gun used to clock his speed and/or of his patrol car if he was "tracked". Nine out of ten times the officers don't even show to court and cannot provide sufficient documentation. Doubtful they will jump through hoops on a 1mph over ticket.

Tell your friend that the standard deviation of a radar gun is 2-3mph. From statistics, this means there is a good chance that he was not actually speeding and instead it was the radar gun that was off. The court cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt that you were speeding, and it will be thrown out. Iron Clad defense.

stats behind it: use a simple z-test, x - mean / std dev ==> 1 / 2.5 = .4... using a z-table, you can show that there is a 34% chance that your friend wasn't speeding and instead it was the radar gun that was off.

Was he really going 61? I ask because I have known officers to reduce the speed written on the ticket down, because depending upon the state, 5 mph or less over the limit is only a fine and not any points on the license.

I could also see the judge throwing it out as well.

That was my first question, too.
