Looked at used Camaro ss Potential Issue.

I just looked at a 2012 Camaro ss with 14k at a small independent dealer.

While looking under the hood I noticed the main pulley(harmonic balancer?) had some noticeable wobble to it.

The car is out of warranty and nothing on the carfax not even an oil change.

Just worried about a bent internal or something that would lead to failure. I have seen some of the SS sedans had the issue as well.

Cause for concern?

I would be worried about boy racer mods in general.

Look elsewhere. There are other low mileage 5th gens available.

Not anywhere near me. Has anyone experienced this here with the harmonic balancer pulley wobble?

From what I found early 2000's vettes had this issue as well.

What are the ramifications and the cause?

Is it just a matter of replacing the pulley wheel or does it originate with the engine crank?

I didn't take one as the dealer was standing beside me. I didn't mention my observation and neither did they, clearly. Only 14k on the clock too, had me wondering if the car was modded for that to occur.

First and foremost demand the dealer check the ECM count. If greater than one the car was at a minimum tuned (and maybe other mods) ... move on fast!

If it wasnt tuned DON'T F-around and try to diagnosis the cause & severity of the wobble (oil on HB, cracked, only at idle, engine shake under load, etc) tell the dealer you are REALLY interested BUTTT they first have to replace the HB before you'll even consider going thru with a purchase.
