WARNING ABOUT THE MICHELIN PSS UPGRADE!
I changed my original worn tires with the Michelin Pilot Super Sports (315/35, 295/35). They look and handle great, BUT:
The other day I was driving on the highway through a bend on the road and there was a dip on the road. I was maybe going a little fast for the dip, not the road and my new front "outside" tire got a nice shave on the edge. Apparently the shave came from the top of the front plastic air deflector because I checked the fender and the paint is intact. It wasn't dangerously deep but it shaved about 2-3 mm from the edge of the tire. Just throwing it out there in case anybody is thinking about upgrading to Michelins. If there is a 285/35 Michelin tire, Iwould go with that for the front. The rear tires don't look like they will have any rubbing issues. Update 8/16/14: FRONT TIRES ARE RUINED. THEY ARE RUBBING ON THE FENDER, NOT THE PLASTIC THING. ONE CUT IS SO DEEP THAT I CAN SEE THE WIRES. ORDERING 285/35 PSSs TODAY. IT'S CURIOUS THAT THE LEFT TIRE IS THE ONE WITH THE MOST DAMAGE. THE RIGHT TIRE HAS A VERY LIGHT RUB ON IT. MUST BE SOME ASYMMETRY ON THE CAR. Photos of front & rear just after installation.

I would imagine that if you wanted to, you could put a large chunk of modeling clay on top of the tire, jack the car up high enough to put a 4x4 (or whatever height it would take) under the tire then lower the car until the tire is at max vertical travel.
When you're done, check the modeling clay to see just how much clearance you have at full compression. you can see from any impressions in the clay, just what part of the car comes closest to contacting the tire. you can also repeat the process after turning the steering wheel full in either direction. Same method people use to measure for valve to piston clearance. |

I also have the 295/315 combo.
However, my slight rubbing is in the back. The tire against the rear mud guard, but only over sudden deep depressions in the road. Usually only with another person in the car. I have a full-size-ish spare and sub in the trunk, so my back may sit a bit lower than stock. |

Michelins are notoriously wider than every other tire. Still surprised to hear that 315's are rubbing though.

Are you certain that the rubbing was in the front ?
There seems to be so much clearance in the front. Also...on the pictured wheel, there are no marks on the tire indicating that a rub occurred. Unless it was on the tread edge and subsequently wore away. On my back tire, you can clearly see a light mark around the tire where it briefly rubbed. |

Please keep us updated on how it goes after you filed the plastic edge and if it continues to happen. This is the exact combo I was looking at after my GY's go Bye-bye. Friend of mine went to the PSS from the GY and said he finds they stick just as well on track days and are much more driver friendly for living on the Wet coast like we do. So this kind of info is really important on if I size up or stay close to what we have with the GY.

Ultimately, it is the best choice for a dry/wet summer street tire.
Mine only rubs a bit, when loaded a bit and under heavy sudden compression. Any slight damage to the plastic part on which it rubs is not noticeable, as it is probably the inner edge of the rear splash guard. Just gotta live with the occasional rub noise. No biggie. Hopefully the same for the front end rubbers. |
