Is sales tax calculated before or after incentives/discounts?

For example, you had a $500 Farm Bureau discount, and a new GM Card member $500 discount, and so on...

I assume everything comes off, then sales tax is calculated, correct?

I ask as sometimes dealer "cash backs" can be included in the sales tax amount.

Pretty sure you pay the tax on the "before" price....

Rebates, cash-back, etc. are technically applied after you buy the car for the "full price"....

Good luck.

I think some states differ so you will have to lookup your state laws, but in Florida this is how it works:

Base MSRP/Starting Price (Including Military, College, Employee, Supplier)
- Add installed options (LPO or otherwise)
- Add destination charge
- Subtract Trade-in Value (getting $10k for your trade in, subtract from above price)
=======
Subtotal
- Calculate Sales Tax on Subtotal
=======
Subtotal
- Add Payoff of Trade-in above (If they're giving you 10k and you owe 6k, add 6k here)
- Add Title/Tag/Tire/Environmental/Docs/Dealer/any other "fees that show up"
- Subtract any Private Offer, Farm Bureau, Incentives, Rebates, Dealer discounts
=======
Total you will pay

In Pa, I have never paid tax on anything but the bottom line cost that's one advantage to trading a car in too. The trade in is subtracted off of all other cost and you only pay tax on the difference.

In Virginia you pay tax on the price before the rebates. Virginia also does not give you credit for a trade-in like most states.

What a rip off that is. Paying tax on money that you aren't spending.

Most incentives and cashback are entered as a downpayment, hence tax on full price......

Not in Pa. Op you should just ask the dealer. Each state has their own rules on sales tax.

The real scam is when they collect sales tax each time the car is sold again as a used car...
