Helmets?

Hey folks, I'm headed to a SCCA event at Pocono May 10th and helmets are a must. Opinions are welcome.

I was leaning towards open faced as this ZLE sucks for its visibility to put mildly. Or should I go closed?

Brands?

Size is 23'', 23-1/4'', Medium I'd think?

Tony

Go try some on, find your local dealer. You didn't mention your head shape. Do you have any helmet wearing experience? Even a motorcycle helmet that fits well can help narrow down the fitment for a car helmet. Every brand fits differently, and every model within every brand fits differently. You'll also have to decide on a budget range, whether you need HANS anchors, cooling preferences, washability, visor change ease, eye port size.

Given your comment about visibility, you probably want either a large eye port like a Bell Sport or an open face.

At a minimum, you want a Snell SA2015 to be allowed to run all HPDE's. Consider adjusting the size you buy based on whether you plan on wearing a fire-rated balaclava.

If there aren't any dealers nearby, there are plenty of online retailers. Find one that can work with you on sizing and shaping. Pegasus, OG Racing, Winding Road, Saferacer are just a few.

Trying them on is a must. Every head/face is different. The measurement around your head is just a starting point.
I happened to be on vacation, staying 3 minutes away from OG racing. I picked up a G-force helmet. Great visibility and super comfortable.
I found so many brands either crushed my ears or cheeks.

Ok, I'm heading too Stabile Energy Motorsports in New Jersey to get fitted this Thursday or Friday to take the guessing game out of the equation.

Thanks All...

Open just for better breathing. I raced go carts with a closed helmet recently and had trouble breathing. I use open, normally a 3/4 or sometimes a 1/2 on my Harley.

I didn't want to spend a ton, I got this one

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It's pretty nice. I kept the visor up most of the time while i was on the track.

I prefer open face in a closed cockpit.

I have this one, and I’m happy with it. http://www.soloperformance.com/Pyrot...k_p_11751.html

^^^ This.

I've been doing HPDE for 5-6 years and race a SE46 BMW with NASA.

That option from Amazon is an excellent low cost choice. I own one of those and a $450 Pyrotech helmet as well. Design, features and build quality are nearly identical between the two

Definitely go for a SNELL 2015, and I'd strongly discourage an open face helmet

I was an MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) Instructor for 3 years back in the late 80's and a safety NCO in the Army for many, many more years and will tell you this... If you have a 10 dollar head, wear a 10 dollar helmet. Don't skimp on protecting yourself, you have good insurance on your 60+ thousand dollar car I assume so get a good F'n helmet because your head is priceless!

Go to a store and try them on. I recently did online research and then bought something completely different after trying them on. I bought a Simpson Devil Ray Carbon that was on sale. I have good visibility, lower weight, higher level of safety, comfortable, and no fatigue during track days.
