Whether you go fixed or VVT, drivability is not anything to worry about with a NF or similar cam and a stall converter. The NF has a killer lope. The car will drive differently, but it will take all of 4 hours to get used to it.

See if there is anyone around you with a cam in an auto and see if you can ride with them or drive the car to check it out.

Reliability-wise, if everything is spec'd right, use good oil and change it when you need to, have a good shop tune it, upgrade things like timing chain/oil pump/rockers etc, itll all be good.

If you just want the sound ask about a Ghost Cam from what I understand a Tuner can readjust your timing and give your car that racy lope sound.

I'm thinking about getting the ls3 conversion kit along with titanium valve springs with Phastek Stage 3 LS3 Camshaft by MTI/Comp Cams. But if vvt is so good why even offer a ls3 conversion?

Thought this was available on on the V6.

I am not going to say I don't WANT an extra 100hp under the hood.

Options, preferences, opinions, etc. Some people/shops just don't want VVT, some don't want or know how to tune it. Some people don't like that the VVT cams are single bolt instead of 3 bolt, etc etc. Some old guys who own shops are too set in their ways and think VVT isn't worth a damn.

There are also low lash solid lifters as an option now that make good power. Or you can keep the stock cam and get a blower, its all up to the individual or the shop doing the work.

It is all about what and where you want it. VVT is the next big thing, power everywhere. It is also more complicated and less understood.

I think people convert because of availability of tuners in their area. At this stage in the game I don't know that one is better than the other... They both have their pros and cons... Really depends on what you want.
If you own a ford 5.4l with vvt, then you are probably cussing VVT - of course if I owned a ford I would be cussing that I owned a ford.

I am still weighing out the pros and cons of each... It currently seems like that for what I do and want, sticking with VVT gives me the best of both worlds... It will not have quite the sound of the NF cam, but does give me improved drivability.

No decision made yet. That being said I have nothing but good things to say about the attitude of the shops that I have contacted here (most all are contributing members)

L99 CAM questions

BTR Stage 2 with springs, locks, seals and pushrods, LS3 conversion, 2400 stall, Katech C5R timing chain, rocker arm Trunion upgrade kit, Rp Crank Bolt, LS7 lifters, ARP head bolts, LS9 head gaskets, 3 bolt cam gear kit, valley cover assembly, lifter tray/bolts, front cover kit, Precision Industries custom stall converter and aftermarket trans cooler, ATI super balancer and Melling high volume oil pump.

I'm very happy with the car! Drivability is great and I went from 370rwhp to 450rwhp and went from 368rwtq to 423rwtq. The car has a very nice lope to it and is putting power down on the pavement. I didn't want anything real aggressive or something that would be an announcement that I'm coming. The car gets attention but it's not over the top. I can comfortably drive in a funeral procession or pull up to the JW Marriott with my lady and not be a spectacle.

It's amazing to have this kind of power after the car was the way it was. It has a an exotic sound when in the higher power bands as well, the exhaust that is. My shop was surprised I had a SLP catback exhaust to go along with the ARH and high flow cats.

I can't get a video clip with my iPhone to do it justice nor embed it on this forum.

I've been through this, I have some thoughts....

-VVT, would have better low end, due to the cam phasing.
-VVT means you would also need to change less stuff.
-I think if you want something as lopey as a Night Fury, you'll need at least a 3200 or a 3600 stall converter.
-I've gone from 370rwhp bolt-ons to 463rwhp heads and cam.
-Different cams lope differently.

I have GPI VVT SS3 (227/243 112). I have the quietest mufflers I could find, but that's soon to change when I redo the whole system:

Thanks for the info. Car sounds great. I have been talking with GPI. Definately seems like the way to go. I am still pondering on SS1 or SS2. It is a tough decision. I would love to drive a SS2 just to make sure that it is not to aggressive for Daily driving.
