First world problems.... 5th gen ZL1 or 6th Gen ZL1
Hi All,
I currently have a 2013 V6 that will be paid off by the end of the year and I am planning on upgrading around May of 2019. Originally I was thinking I would just get a 2013 ZL1 when I was ready to upgrade but the 2017 ZL1 is looking really tempting. 2013 ZL1's are going for ~35k right now. I've seen some 2017's for mid to low 50's already. Do you guys think the 2017's will be closer to 45k a year from now? Those of you that have had both a 5th gen and a 6th gen ZL1, would you say it is worth the extra 10-15k for the 6th gen? Here is what I have come up with for pros and cons of each. 2013: Pros: Cheaper, more money for mods, still has 580hp stock and is easy to get to 600whp from what I have read. Cons: Heavier. Basically same car that I have had for the last 5 years just WAY better performance wise but exterior and interior are just upgraded versions of what I already have. 2017: Pros: Whole new exterior & (much nicer) interior. LT4. Has the latest and greatest appeal. Lighter and faster stock. Cons: More expensive Either car would be a daily driver since I only average about 10 miles per day and at the end of the day, we aren't talking about million dollar bugattis here lol might as well enjoy it these beasts!! What are your thoughts? Sorry, lots of questions even though I have a year to make up my mind but I can't be the only one who can never seem to stop thinking about cars |

There's no question that the 2017+ ZL1 is superior. I had a 2013 ZL1 and now a 2018 ZL1 and they're night and day. But that doesn't make the 5th gen shabby, because they're still awesome cars. They make great power with simple modifications and are bombproof reliable. If you can't quite afford a 6th gen ZL1 comfortably then have no shame in getting a 5th gen because they're still great cars. There's somethings that the 5th gen does better, like aftermarket support which is H.U.G.E for the LSA/ZL1, bigger interior, arguably more comfortable for a daily driver, still has bluetooth and other tech things you'd want in a daily, actually can make just as much or more RWHP as an LT4 due to the .2l larger blower (1.9l on LSA vs 1.7l on LT4) so both cars tend to peak at around 760-800 RWHP when fully built but there's more LSA's over 800 RWHP than there are LT4s. The LT4 is a great bolt on motor, but doesn't do much after that point due to the blower being tapped out. Also the direct injection is still being figured out and is more expensive to fuel whereas everybody has the LSA figured out already.
Alright without getting on a mod tangent, I guess the real advantage to the 6th gen is the latest and greatest appeal. Go down any of the main points of a high performance car and they nearly cancel each other... Both have: Stout engine that is easy to modify and responds well (LSA is easier actually) Stout transmission/clutch/rear end Great handling/track characteristics (These are no one trick pony) Huge brakes Aggressive looks with modern styling cues Magnetic Ride A host of traction, suspension, and steering settings And more. All in all, if you can afford the 6th gen, get it because it does do a lot of stuff a bit better. But if it's too much then have no fear in going 5th gen. |

^ what he said. I had a '13 vert and it was awesome, but doesn't hold a candle to the 6th gen. Just take your time and look for the best deal.

Anyone have the 10-speed auto & your thoughts/feedback on its performance.

If you can reasonably afford the Gen 6 - go that route without a question...it is that much better in nearly every way.
If you're looking for a more budget route - there is nothing wrong with a gen 5, it is in it's own right a phenomenal car!! And like you said - more money for mods!! |

I agree no shame in the 5th gen zl1 heck My 71 yr old Dad still has one and I did some simple mods to it and it puts down just over 600 to the tire. He loves it.

$3k got me to 585whp on my LSA. Which is a common result.

Gen V ZL1 is a heat soak king. One good roll run and it’s dead.

I have the 10 speed auto in my 6th gen currently a 750rwhp. and the A10 is badazz! i had it tuned along with the ECM. So far so good. Never again will i buy another Manual... Manuals do make me feel a lil more engaged with the car but these autos shift so fast and just flat out work...
