The Z/28 guys say the Z06/Z07 LT4 runs too hot... Interesting.

obviously this is a Z/28 forum and we should all be fans of the Z/28. It is reckless reporting what other posters have reported without having the experience.

I say go for it Stephen considering the issues you had with the Z28 and then you can say you to have owned all three. You only live once my friend.

You can take a bone stock 2016 Z06 A8, put some drag radials on the rear, and rip off high tens in the quarter, with good atmospheric air and track conditions.
THAT is one bad hombre. (Yer wife could run tens in a Z06 auto) |

Stephen, here's my advice, find a nice 2015 with a manual and Z07 if you can. You should be able to find one in the low 90s or mide 80s. Invest $800 on an LG Motorsports Radiator, the GMPP secodary radiator (manual cars only), and buy heat shields for the oil cooler (which is next to the cats hence the high oil heat) and you'll be set. |

Having owned both cars the Z06 is a real beast. Naturally there will be some "issues," GM sold over 9,000 in 2015 alone! The Z06 with iron discs will still cause your eyeballs to come out of your head, the Z07 package just gives you a stiffer suspension and some mandatory aero improvements. It's much more affordable to track a Z06 stage 2 aero car then a Z07 if dollars are a concern.

Z/28 is great on track but the other 99% of the time is really loud & bone jarring. I suppose that appeals to the younger crowd here...feeling old. My kids like it and I don't mind it. The ZL1 was better "all around" and the Z06 opportunity is there for 80k. Still contemplating...I do appreciate all of the helpful comments.

And I have been passenger in a Z/28 and I have been parked next to some during tracks days and sitting side beside my ZL1 with the hood open after the track session they are hotter.... So go I find it funny the Z/28 crowd is so defensive of the ZL1 peeps......don't hate on the better all around car..... Stephen, I say go for it...the Z06/07 is a great car. I'd jump on it in a sec if I could afford to do so. Good luck in whatever you decide.

[QUOTE=KaBoom1701;8786500]That's an ignorant statement.....so I have to own an Z/28 to comment on them running hot on the track......It's already well documented and anybody knows that larger displacement engines run hotter....that's then nature of the beast...
I never mentioned anything about a Z/28 running hot. What is ignorant is people reporting information that they have only read themselves and don't know if it is true.

The cooling requirement between LS3 and LS7 is actually not that much. I've owned a '06 Z06, and then a '12 Grand Sport (same aero, dry sump, and cooling on both cars, but the latter has LS3), and my max oil temps at the same track were very close, with the Z06 running about 5 degrees hotter (if that) on average. I actually attributed it more to running higher average RPMs than power/displacement at the time. Later, when I bought a '13 Z06, I realized it was running much hotter, which is due to switching to the water-to-oil cooler post ZR1 era, so that's not a good comparison. An NA car creates exhaust at around 1300 degrees F, while FI cars generate around 1800 degrees F, and it is very hard to keep everything cool. No wonder, ZR1 had oil squirters for the pistons. Thinking LS7 has bigger cooling issues than LSA just because it's 7 liters vs. 6.2 liters is borderline crazy in my opinion

The cup tires or pzeros aren't too bad in the light snow if you know car control...lol
Seriously though, I build racing engines for a living. The lt4 is junk. Look how cheap it is as a crate motor from GM. Same cost as the ls7 while the ls9 is almost 10k more. |
