All cracked up!

I was wondering if anyone else has these cracks under their splitter. I just noticed them tonight while under the car for some detailing and just a general look see.

My Z/28 has 360 miles on it. I didn't expect to see these cracks when I looked underneath. The cracks are nearly identical and they are on both sides of the splitter. About an inch or two back from the leading edge.

If someone would check theirs, I'd appreciate it. If it was just one side, I think it might be a different problem. But both sides? Me thinks defect.

Thoughts?

It probably happened when bumper was hit by you or the dealer, and it cracked from the weakest stress points which happen to be those locations.

When in doubt, always slow to crawl when entering bumps. If you hit it, which happens to everyone, it would be more likely to flex than crack when very slow.

It isn't the bumper. It's the splitter. Do you own a Z/28? If yes, do you have these cracks? If not, what are you basing your hypothesis on?

Thanks for the driving tips. I never thought about slowing down going over bumps in a $76,000 car.

Oops, I meant splitter. You're welcome, ask me anytime! : p

I wasn't trying to be a smartass, but when my brother told me to 'almost stop' over bumps, it made a huge difference, and I stopped scraping the bottom of it. Well, this was a decade ago, back when we owned a C5 Z06.

EDIT: FYI, I do have the full Z/28 aero.

Just checked mine, no cracking. I did notice the outer edges are chewed up though, so its definitely scraped. :/

The rubber flaps seem to be there to direct air passing under away from the wheels?

Honestly, it could have somehow happened at the dealer. The car had 60 miles on it when I bought it. (Yes, I knew what I was possibly getting in to). I know I haven't hit anything, nor are there any scrapes at all underneath and no signs of damage on the leading edge or the top. It looks like stress cracks of some sort and since they were on both sides I thought I may have found something.

Hopefully someone else will chime in that has the cracks, but I might be relegated to living with it for now and replacing it down the road when I actually do go too fast over a bump and really bang it up!

Thanks guys for the responses. Even X25!

Mine also has the cracks. Same exact spots. I seen a silver z at the Chevrolet display at the races the other day that had the cracks also.

Just checked mine. Car has 620 miles on it and both sides are cracked in the same spot as yours, but not nearly as bad.
1 1/2" crack on the drivers side. 1/2 " on the passenger side. No scrape or impact marks anywhere, and I've never had a fight with a speed bump.

I'm going to the dealer in the morning. I'll let everyone know what comes of it.

must be a bad mold or weak "fiberplastic"...yeah, I made that up. I doubt anything happened to cause it and the dealer will order a new unit ASAP as a warranty item. Good luck & report your findings at the dealer.

How did you make out? I checked mine and felt great after checking the drivers side. Nothing at all, looks perfect. Then I checked the passenger side and it has the exact same crack as yours on that side.

I didn't look over everything, but is that just a bottom piece or would the entire splitter have to be replaced?

I am going tomorrow. Friday morning. It looks like the entire splitter has to be replaced to me.

Do these things come already painted? This could be an event getting this replaced.

There might be a run on this part in the supply system, so I'm glad I'm going tomorrow!
