they may have been the wimpest cars by their list......but if you look at when we are talking about....the late 70's and 80's....they ALL were wimpy cars.....from the factory that is.

My '82 Camaro looked good... damn good. The six banger under the hood got 12 MPG (if I was careful), and made 102 hp. I once tried to drag race a Winnebago that was towing another Winnebago, and lost by four Winnebago lengths in the quarter mile. And I think I even jumped the light.

All cars in those years were junk as far as performance goes. In in 1979 the little Red Express pick up was fastest production vehicle made in the USA. It even smoke the Vette.
What does that tell you about those times. Some of those cars could be made to run fast though. The Cobra and Monza could be made into monsters with different motors. edit: I believe I may be wrong after thinking about it. The 78 had a little more power than the 79 little red express. So the 78 may have been the top dog in 78 not 79. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. Last edited by motorhead; 09-17-2012 at 08:17 PM. |

Aahh the 70's and early 80's. The "Dark Ages" of the automotive world. Iron-block V-8's pumping out 140 - 165 HP, and barely getting 12 MPH during the gas crisis! And those "high performance" 14" polyglass tires felt like you were corning on sponges.

I actually get to see a Citation X-11 every once in a while at work. It's in great shape. Don't see many of them or the Pontiac Phoneix any more.

1971 was the first year of the demise of the muscle car. Every car across the board got their HP cut as to try and increase MPG's. Government regulations on top of more regulations put a stop to high horsepower pavement pounders. What you were left with was heavy chunks of steel with anemic V8's (sometimes V6's), barely able to get out of their own way. :(

You took the words right off of my keyboard..... And Monza, Mirada, and Delorean?? None of them were EVER muscle cars, much less performance sports cars. The only point to the article was that in the late 70's early 80's, cars sucked!!

I didn't get that, either... and the writer of the article even alluded to thinking that the Citation looked pretty cool, thus proving that he's either the guy who designed it, an alien from the planet Losertron, or is my great- grandmother ghostwriting on a real rough day of meds...

Owned a 74 TransAm with the big motor 455SD in late 70's and the new '82 Z28 PaceCar with V8 305 145HP. Wasn't lucky enough to find one in an area showroom with Crossfire and 165. Yeah those were some interesting times.
