Embarrassing Basic Engine Question...

Hey guys,

I'm not 100% inept... I installed my own CAI intake, ported TB, and apex scoop without a hiccup. BUT, some may laugh, what is an intake manifold?? Specifically, these "FAST" intake manifolds I keep seeing??
I thought my "intake" was taken care of with a cold air intake and ported TB...

Thanks!

Like mentioned above the black plastic piece were the throttle body mounts is the intake manifold. Just in case you want to know the manifold's purpose in a nut shell is to evenly distribute the air that has been sucked in by the intake to each of the ports that is needed for combustion.

If you take off your big engine cover with the V8 logo on it, there's another smaller cover under it that covers the "intake". Its the 8 short "intake" tuby thingys that run horizontal if your standing right in front of the grill.
...
Long story short the "intake" is where the air goes after air is sucked into the CAI.
...
No such thing as a dumb question when you don't know the answer
EDIT:
Better yet here's a pic of it detached. The one on the right is from a LS3

Ahh thank you all, that makes sense. So a FAST manifold/ported manifold just has 8 wider "tubes" for more air disbursement, but it seems like it would still be limited by the intake... Is that why it's not a popular mod?

...Just curious....why does the stock manifold have that plastic cover over it, (and then the engine cover itself?)....

And to reduce engine noise. There is never a stupid question. I have learned more about cars because of this site and my Camaro club.
