Does the 1LE rear spoiler make downforce
I recently swaped my stock rear SS spoiler for a convertable Zl1 spoiler (got it from a friend). which to me looks like the same as the 1LE??? it is not as tall as the ZL1 coupe version but does it produce any downforce on a coupe? this is more of a curiosity question. i know the vert has different aerodynamics properties.
i tried looking this up but i wasn't having much luck.

Yes, they have switch to a ZL1 or the option to get a ZL1 style spoiler, and yes it is functional in helping create downforce

The spoiler is actually painted, not a wrap like the hood

figured if he can build a motor to put out that much power that he would be up to date on spoilers, I thought they were for looks on a funny cars until I read this, so now that he knows what it is, he may find use

I believe the ZL1 spoiler starts to improve downforce (worth mentioning) at speeds above 110 mph.
But other modifications on the car also increase downforce to make the car more stable at higher speeds (150+ mph). Z28 R race car - designed to produce lots of downforce to make it stick to the track. But downforce actually slows a car down in a straight line, but it's also necessary to keep the car stable and planted at higher speeds. Example - drag racing spoilers are usually flat and don't stick up or curve up. That helps to add stability without slowing the car down. Drag wing/spoiler pic <img src=""/> |

on a serious note, if i was going to change spoilers i would want both looks and down force

The Z-28 spoiler or Blade spoiler from GM both create down force. And down force is created before 100MPH. The ZL1 spoiler creates down force but not as much as the other two. Down force is needed more in corners to keep the rear end from sliding out. And looking at many tracks their corners are not 100MPH corners. On the 1LE the front splitter on the 2013 model helped allot on the straights as the car wanted to create lift the faster you went. The splitter helps keep the front end planted. The 2014 1LE reduced lift by using the same type of tech they used on the 1LE to get pressure out from under the hood.

IIRC the video that came out talking about the ZL1's aero said they tested it as low as 50mph so there has to be something there. If it doesn't do anything until 100 mph I'm good though.
In my case I've been observing the dirt/dust collection on the rear bumper it's been a progression on my car. Initially I had the stock 1LE/SS spoiler it showed a considerable amount of dirt/dust. The convertible spoiler I added for looks made a marked improvement. Actually this is what had me really looking into spoilers on these cars. The Z/TA spoiler I now have is pretty much a convertible spoiler x approx 200%. Shows little to no dirt. I don't have a wind tunnel but I can make deductions from my observations. I've added length to my spoiler which has moved any turbulence further away from the tail of the car. By adding a more aggressive angle I have increased the down force whenever it kicks in. If it made no difference there wouldn't be any changes. Sent from my DROID RAZR HD using Tapatalk
