Windshield problems
Hi group. I got my RJT 2SS RS just about a month ago. I am 99% extremely happy with it but have noticed that there is a warping effect from the windshield on the driver's side. It is very distracting while I'm driving and a couple of times I have experienced motion sickness from the effect. The guys at the dealer are being very helpful and even demonstrated that another camaro on the lot had a similar effect. I could appreciate that car too had the issue but it didn't seem as drastic as mine.
Additionally, they tried to advise me against replacing the windshield stating that it breaks the integrity of the original factory seal on the windshield, implying this is less than ideal. Not to mention they said that the windshield is part of the structural design of the car and replacing it might compromise that?? They also warned me that the next windshield could have the warping effect as well simply because the piece of glass is so expanse. I asked them to order a new windshield for me for replacement, risking that the next windshield will have the same problem. I have been in some much larger vehicles with much larger windshields and have never experienced this issue. So, anybody else out there have this problem? Could I have a windshield from a bad piece of glass and most likely the replacement will be fine? Is it really a huge issue to replace the windshield on a new car? Is it the pitch of the glass that causes this effect? How common is this? Are there any recalls to be aware of related to this? Thanks for your input. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Sincerely,

Well the winshield IS part of the structural integrity of the car but when replaced properly does not affect it at all. Not sure why your dealer is saying not to replace it?
Don't have mine yet to see what you are talking about, Have a glass shop look at it and go from there I'd say.

I had the EXACT same problem in my 2001 WS6 Trans Am when I bought it new. It bugged the hell out of me. I never fixed it (worried about the dealer screwing it up) and ended up selling the car 6 months later.

Sounds like a defective windshield. I do insurance and we see this alot when the body shops use after market glass. The difference on some of the glass is day and night versus factory glass. My windshield does not have this and yours should not either. Maybe the dealer is uncomfortable with replacing it. They normally use a glass shop or have a glass guy do it. Just make sure you get a good glass guy, hopefull one that has already done one of these.

My windshield is fine. You must have a bad one. Especially if it's only distorting on the driver side.

I had the same problem, a distortion right through the middle. Problem was solved after catching a rock and getting a big crack. New windshield now and no distortion (Pilkington, same as OEM).

Nobody should be afraid of windshield replacement. It is true it have its technique and tricks, but even the most expensive cars with difficult installations can be done professionally for a good glass shop. I worked in a shop, and helped to replace Mercedes,BMW's and never had a problem as the dealer says.

u have a defective piece of glass. this happens all the time with factory glass and aftermarket glass. insist that it be warrantied and get a new windshield. pilikington is the same glass as factory but it does not have the gm logo on it. make sure when they do the replacement they use the gm glass because this is a warrenty issue and they should be getting the glass formt here parts dept.
if the install is done correctly it will be better than factory and you will have no problems.. |

I have never noticed anything like this in my car. I also am unsure why the dealer would feed you all the stuff about replacing the glass. This happens all the time when windshields get chipped, cracked and broken. As others have said, if it is done right you shouldn't be afraid of replacement and neither should the dealer.
Before you replace the glass, I would sit in some more Camaros and make sure those other cars don't have the same effect. I know you said you sat in one, but I am not sure that is enough to be definitive. If the other cars don't have the same distortion as yours, then I would push to have it replaced. Good luck and keep us posted. |
