Ford Engine Won’t Start
Bought a 2006 Ford Escape that I was told needed a new timing chain for $160. It had new tires so I figured it was worth the price. I pulled the engine replaced timing chain, cam gears, valves and seals and cleaned everything inside.
Put it all back together and in the process one of the vacuum lines broke. The starter spins the flywheel because the crankshaft turns when it turns over. But there is not start, not even close. There is fuel, I pulled the fuel rail and it was full. The crank sensor is working, on fords if the CEL clicks off after turning the key that is supposed to indicate the sensor is working. I am at a loss. Any ideas? I can scrap it, but I sank $600 into it on valves, gaskets, various parts and battery. I doubt I would get $300 for the scrap, and maybe $200 for the tires.

You need compression, fuel, and spark for an engine to run. You've confirmed fuel, what about the other 2?
Maybe not getting spark? If you've got spark, maybe out of time from the chain and cam gears replacement? |

Like Silver said, you need the other 2. Usually spark is the weakest link.
If it's out of time you can tell the compression pulse come out through the intake sometimes. So it will suck, blow, suck, blow as you're cranking it.

I am thinking it is timing. There is spark, I pulled each coil pack out and they are working, new plugs.
When I installed the new valves the height is off. Dual overhead cams and the height is set by tappets on top of the springs. Not sure how to adjust those. I was told to set the timing by using the ford tool to hold the cams in place while turning the crank to TDC. Then install the chain. Which I did. My guess is that the cams having a lack of space on the tappets is affecting the compression. I thought it would start but run rough and misfire at worst.

Try doing an ol' school compression test.
