ZL1 supercharger issues ?

Hey guys

Im going to put a deposit down on a 2012 zl1, it does have pretty high miles compared to what is usually on the market (about 40 000 miles)

I am wondering what to prepare for if the supercharger develops the rattle that some are getting?

Ive heard some say its covered under warrantee? Im buying it used from a private sale and as far as I know there is no warrantee on it.

Others say its a big jo where you have to remove the SC from the heads and open it up ?

Others seem to minimize it and say its an easy fix with a new isolater or something.

Please let me know what I should be prepared for.

Thank you very much in advance

Regardless of the car being out of warranty and you purchasing it used privately you are still covered under the supercharger warranty which is a 10 year/120000 mile warranty.

A 2012 at 40k miles may of already had the blower recall fixed. The coupler in the blower usually goes out in the 10k to 30k mile range on the 12's & 13's. You can ask your dealership service department to run your vin to get a list of work that was done to your car to verify. My 2013 ZL1 had 29k when I purchased it last year... Thankfully, the blower recall was performed right before I purchased it, so did have to worry about it. That was another reason I picked a ZL1 that was driven, and not a garage queen.

That is just fantastic , I also read that online but I wasn't 100% sure.

Ive went ahead now and left the deposit on the car , this really puts me at ease.

Thanks for the help

sounds good, although ive asked him if any repairs have been done and he said nothing other then maintenance.

But its really good to kno that if something happens the dealer will take care of it free of charge.

I will be covered for another 3 years until 2022 from the sounds of it.

On My previous 2013 Z, I didn't get the rattle until around 66k miles.

Is it common enough that most 2012+2013 people are getting it or is it still only a few percent?

Id rather not have to deal with it but getting a brand new blower installed would be a pretty good bonus.

I called my dealer about this and they told me there is no official recall but they will replace the unit when it starts making noise. They will not replace it as a preventive measure like a recall....it has to fail.

Yeah and that sucks because they all WILL fail (2012 2013 until they copied the aftermarket solid poly coupler fix). The spring eats into the shaft so there is no other way it will go. It's not like a part that might not burn out or snap in two. Driving it gentle or changing your oil every month and following a ritual for break-in won't have an affect either

IIRC their replacement guidance was if you hear the noise from sitting inside with the windows up and doors closed. Others have had their dealer change it with just hearing the marbles in a can type rattle with the hood open standing next to it. Like all things it depends on how reasonable your local dealer service department is.
