I always thought it would be faster in a straight line, Ford knew for several months what numbers then needed to beat. Again, if they had not beat the ZL1 in a straight line it would have been the most epic fail of all time. Its fast I will give it that, but I still feel the Boss and ZL1 are more complete cars. You can mod a Boss or ZL1 to do what the Shelby does. There is no mod to make the Shelby do what the ZL1 does on the track

I honestly think the two cars are only making each other better. We know the pony wars over the years were generally close, but always seemed to land on the camaro's side.

In my opinion its a chess match. Lets just hope its not check mate.

He is just asking for a factory backed performance upgrade to his ZL1. I think it is in the right place.

As many have said, it is not hard to get an extra 100HP out of the LSA (even with non forged pistons).

Great post, OP. Styling is completely subjective whereas performance is not. It takes nothing away from the ZL1 that the GT500 performs so well. Well, other than bragging rights which, by the looks of things on this site lately, seems to mean a lot!

The ZL1 is a badass car, as is the GT500. There should be no shame in owning either.

Did motortrend use corrected times like they did with the ZL1? they don't specify if they're corrected or real world.

Only place left to do battle is on the track, (or did I miss that?) but really not many owners will be tracking their ZL1s/GT500s.

That said, by the time you factor in the difference in price and use that for the ZL1 you are much closer....I think it IS something to consider.

But stock vs stock....yeah we know how that is.

M/Ts test of a 2011 zo6/z07 shows it slower than its test of the shelby. Obviously though there are many z06s that have gone faster than 11.8 but we don't know yet what the shelby is really capable of until people with lots of seat time drive them.

Lets face it, this car is in z06/z07 territory now. The only cheap competitors of this car is the zr1 and GTR.

Though I really like the zr1
Well.....here's M/T's offocial test of the C6 Z06 when it came out.
They ran 11.5 at 127 MPH.....no launch control and on first gen F1 Super Car run flats.

http://www.motortrend.com/roadtests/...6/viewall.html

Obviously, there are many among us that have gone much faster as we aquired seat time....a very key component when drag racing a Z06 as the clutch hates drag race launches.

I suspect the 2013 GT500 vs C6 Z06 matchups are going to be very close.....the new GT500 is a brute of a car. But make no bones about it......with "only" 505 HP a C6 Z06 is still a VERY formadable opponent, is cheaper than either the ZR1 of GTR (in base 1LZ mode), and I can't wait for my first heads up matchup with a new GT500 at the strip.

well if it does out perform the zl1 on the road course i will be let down for sure. But going in to this I was talking to my dad (he has always owned chevy) I asked him dad would you be upset if I bought a mustang he replied no but let me ask you this would you be into a mustang as much as you would be a zl1 would you enjoy waxing it as much or have the same amount of passion? I thought for awhile and said youre right dad I am getting the zl1 even if it is slower in all aspects because at the end of the day i want to be happy about my decision and i can always make it faster just wish chevy would from the factory

I made a thread a few days ago, the general concensus is "I drink the kool aid, who cares about performance!!"

I have no doubt the car will not go that fast but I feel like that proabaly a best run or to use the gay internet term "hero" run.

at the press day 11.80-12.0's wer cut.

seeing that video of the 12.02 that guy posted in a manual ZL-1 with almost no seat time makes me think that this is not as big a deal as people make it.

ZL-1 will need pulley and tune to roll with a 2013 GT500 in a strait line. BFD. all that wining and something you can bolt on in a coupel hours brings you back equal. buy the car you like. period.

I think the 2013 GT500 is awesome but if it's best run/hero run is 11.5 then it no hugedeal. 1k into a ZL1 nets the same times.
I guess MT achieved there first "hero run" in history with the GT500 after the first week it was released

Good call..

You can't be serious that this is proof Shelby American produces this car as was stated. Everyone who designed and engineered this car in the video is wearing a Ford SVT shirt.

Maybe someday I can be 135 years old, sit in a car, say "Yeah, that feels good" and get credit for developing it.

What you see here is Ford paying Homage to a automotive legend. Not proof his company developed the car.

I agree with the op. The new gt500's performance should be discussed, and not rationalized as something left for the "Top Dog." The result is what it is....and if the ZL1 doesn't compete then perhaps chevy should consider its retirement.......sorry but its my brutally honest opinion.

Here you go. There have been no posted road course times for a base GT500 (i.e. none of the optional packages) so we have no clue how such a car will perform at such a venue. That being said, you are assuming that such a GT500 won't handle at or near the level of a ZL1. Therefore, your suggestion that the GT500 is only good in a straight line is unfounded until data comes forth to say otherwise.
