LSV10: Prototype LS based V10

Hello all!

Wanted to share my newest buy! As far as I know this is only the second prototype known. I've already spoken with the shop that has the first one, but i wanted to reach out and see if maybe anyone had any of these prototype parts laying around? I'm already fully expecting to build everything from scratch. I know it's not practical, but that's not what I'm looking at. Havent fully decided what it's going in, but my 5th gen is looking real attractive since its paid off and I can sell off the turbo stuff and the LS3 to fund this build.

Yeah the V12 has been installed in a few things these days, but that's a seperate company based out of Australia.

This V10 was a prototype developed by GM.

I'm not saying it can't be done, cause anything can with money, but one thing that sticks out to me would be sourcing a head gasket for it. Everything else I would imagine can be fabricated. Still a really cool engine. I thought it was odd that a fabricated piece would have the stands that are eventually machined out for the AFM system would all be on one bank, then you posted it's a proto.

Is that a 72° block?

Our GM sources says that around the time of this engine’s development, GM was looking to get into the V10 market to compete with the Ford pickup V10 and even the Dodge SRT-10 pickup. This engine we are told made 616 horsepower and 789 lb-ft of torque
That's nuts.

The original plan was to be a truck motor, with one whole bank running afm to be an inline 5 cyl. Not super worried about head gaskets, as I'm sure I can find someone to make a few one off sets.

It is an even firing 72 degree block.

I've been in contact with a small company that can do one off custom cranks and we're looking around $5500. Could be more, could be less, won't know until he has the specs or the block in hand. Heads though, are going to be real pricey.

Do they maintain the typical LS style head specs, aside from having an extra cylinder?

That looks expensive to build and challenging to maintain over time. Love to see these cars go into new directions. Best of luck, OP!

That looks like it would fit perfectly between the fenders of a first gen Monte Carlo (71-72)

Yes, head specs are extremely similar to standard LS heads with 2 extra cylinders. I've got 3 possibilities for heads right now. Adapting an existing V10 set of heads, (probably mopar) cutting welding ls heads together, (not me personally doing it), or lastly, the guy I got the block from said he may have a lead on a set of prototype V10 heads.

It'd be really nice to have the prototype heads just to have them. But there's perhaps more risk that they'll crack; being prototypes suggests they're probably somewhat short of full durability testing & verification.

My opinion would be try for the proto heads first then cut up some LS heads, keep it GM. Whatever way you do go, It'll be cool to see.
