Damn, how the hell do your yellow valve springs look brand new? They stopped making the yellow beehives some time ago and those look brand new.
Anyhow, I think you got super lucky here. Retainer and locks stayed put and did their job. Play the lotto my man.

This engine is not hard to pull. You can pull it, and rebuild it with a cam you choose. If the cyl. is damaged it can be sleeved. You can purchase one head new. This is probably the cheapest route if you have mechanical skills, and the time to do it. I'm from Mass. too! Somerset. Good luck.

First post OP said it had a banged up piston. I suppose it could still run that way, right? Also, did the piston damage occur because the broken spring let the valve slip too low?? Trying to educate my self here...

Yes a broken spring will leave the valve hanging open. Piston comes up and smacks the valve. Are you asking if it will run if you just replace the valve spring? It will run, likely misfire on that cylinder because the valve will likely be bent and not seal. Also the piston and valve are compromised since they hit each other.

Yep that will do it. Time for a bad ass set of heads! Might be able to get off with just replacing the one piston... but then again where’s the fun in that. At least you didn’t break the head off the valve.

Who here considers replacing stock-for-stock valve springs as a matter of preventative maintenance? (assuming no other performance mods were done)

I'd just try to repair it and not go wild on a build since that wasn't your priority for it in the past.
I'd pull that head and see if the valve guide could be replaced if the chamber and seat aren't beat. Then a new oem type valve, PAC springs all around, and a mild inexpensive LS9 cam https://www.summitracing.com/parts/n...8427?rrec=true And an OEM piston weighed to the same as the one you took out so no crank balancing. I don't see a need for you to do a big rebuild or forged supercharged NOS etc unless it's a goal you haven't shared. And a new lifter and consider trunion bushing upgrade while you're in there. Got the head off yesterday. What do you guys think about the piston? Damage seems very minimal, would it be okay to use as is?
Pushrod obviously took a good whack. Thoughts on the lifter and cam? |

Best thing you can do. Such satisfaction doing this yourself. If you have some mechanical ability, its not hard. I actually find it quite enjoyable. Plus you know what you got when finsihed

You're fine, that little mark mean's absolutely nothing. I'd replace all the springs with GM performance stuff and enjoy your car. You dodged a bullet for sure!

Check the lifters and cam very carefully. If the push rod is bent as shown, the cam and lifter could be damaged as well. Better to know now than find out later.
