Check you axle nuts!!!

Hey guys,

Just wanted to make an info post about loose rear axle nuts on our cars. My 1le had both rear axle nuts loose from the factory. The torque spec is 200ft-lbs and the nut is a 36mm. There are others who have had this problem on these boards. After I tightened mine, any drivetrain play i had has totally disappeared. It's worth checking.

Thanks a bunch. I might have that size socket from a VW I had.

Are you reffering to the screws that hold the axle (cv shaft) onto the differential? Or are you talking about something else? I know they have had problems on some of the being loose I have only visually checked mine but I should probably torque them also. 200 ft-lbs is a lot of torque on a little screw like that, there are grade 10.9 though. I know the service manual isn't real clear on a torque value too, they seem to like to call the drive shaft a "propeller shaft" and the axle shafts as "drive shafts". Are you talking about the wheel hub nut?

And as far as the driveline slack going away, are you referring to the clunk whenever you are coasting and step on the gas again? (the electronic throttle and other things do a good job of masking this is some situations but you can still definitely feel it and it really ruins the experience of the car and makes it seem like a POS.

Or are you talking about the clunk/clang/rattle when you go from drive to reverse and back? I believe this is mostly up and down movement on the driveshaft since the middle carrier "bearing" lets it move around so much. I think its a 2 piece driveshaft with this ridiculously loose carrier support in the middle to try to minimize vibrations. But its funny how they go to these great lengths to try to minimize these vibrations but then they don't care at all about the way more highly noticeable clunk/clank/rattle of the driveshaft when you shift to drive from park/neutral. Its insane how no one cares about that it seems like but me. I would way rather have a slight barely noticeable vibration than the clunk/clang that makes the car feel like a big POS.

Based on size he’s talking about the nut in the center of the rotor when you take off wheel

How is everyone "staking" them??? Is there a hole in the bolt to put a kotter pin??? I know my right one has backed off 5-10° from the factor marking, I recently bought a 36mm socket to tighten it...

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

I'm talking about the 36mm nut on the face of the rotor when you remove the wheel. There really isn't a way to stake them unfortunately. If mine come loose again i'll either use some sort of nordlock washer and locktite or possible drill the axle out and use a cotter pin and castle nut. Either way i'm glad that people are takin the time to check them!! It's important that these nuts are tight!

Guys, Thanks for the heads up. Checked mine and both were backed off some.
You can see how much the one moved in the photo, other had similar movement. Tightened back up but don't have 200 ft-lb torque wrench.

i'm happy that you were able to find they were loose before it became a problem. Is there any way to contact a moderator on here so we can try to "spread the word" about this issue. A loose axle nut can turn into a big safety issue, especially on cars that see track use.

Thanks very much for posting this.
I just checked mine.

The driver's side was tight.
The passenger's side was maybe 5 degrees loose, but is now fully tightened.
I used a 36mm socket left over from my own VW days, a 24 inch breaker bar and about half of my 200 pounds (calibrated arm) .

About 47k miles on the car for reference.
Thanks again, very informative.

You'll want to make sure it's a 6 pt socket. The 36mm I bought was 12 and it didn't fit tight. Mine was tight on the passenger side . 2020 SS

Do you guys have a better picture or a better explanation of where those bolts are? I am going to take my car to a tire shop to have my summer wheels put on and I would like to have the tech look at it but I don't know how can I explain it precisely.
