Timing cover gasket question.
With 1450 miles do I really need to put on a new gasket. The factory one is stuck to the block and the exposed rubber gasket part look just fine. I am tempted to reuse it.
Same deal with my water pump gaskets. I have new of both but wonder if I really need them. |

It has always been my personal opinion to NEVER reuse gaskets.
It's based on nothing but old school high school auto mechanics class from 1986 though.

Gaskets
More important is to use a little rtv sealer on the timing and cam covers where they meet the oil pan.

The worst thing that will happen is it will leak, and you'll have to tear it down again. I thought the same thing when I did mine, but I had new gaskets so I used them.

I did a cam swap and supercharger install without using any new gaskets. No leaks here at all.

Better safe that sorry. I always wonder why there is always enough time to do it over, but never enough time to do it right. I would suggest putting new gaskets and when you put it all back together you won't be second guessing yourself everytime you think about it.

I concur with most, it isn't required, but it is cheap insurance, for the price its best to replace them;
just like doing a 3 bolt cam, it is cheap insurance! |
