NY and emission laws

So I am confused, if you get a hi-flow cat, can it pass a visual inspection? Would a high flow cat and long tube headers pass the NY state smog test?

NY doesn't have a visual inspection or smog test. So yes it would pass with a tune.

Yes, NY does.

From NY DMV website:

Quote:
As part of this inspection, all vehicles will undergo a gas cap check, a visual inspection of the emission control devices, and a test of the chemical components of the vehicle's exhaust. This last test is more comprehensive in the New York metropolitan area, where it is referred to as the "high enhanced" emissions inspection. Outlying counties conduct the "low enhanced" emissions inspection. No matter where you live, the following emission-control devices will be examined if they were originally built into the car:

That sounds outdated, Now they just plug in to your OBD2 port, Readiness monitors all SET your all SET.

Yes, you will pass as long as you dont have a CEL. They are supposed to do a visual check, but no one does. Even with a visual check, you would pass as long as some sort of cats are on there.

I have LT's with high flows and I pass no problem! Funny story, I brought the car in to a Valvoline oil shop for inspection and the guy doing the inspection was asking about the car. I actually told him "yea it's got LT's, high flows and a killer cat back"! He just looked at me with an envious stare and said " wow, pretty sweet"! He didn't even look under the car, just plugged in the OBD and said "your all set"! As I fired it up they all stood there in awe as I drove away!

As long as the obd2 readout is fine it should go over well. I have been told by some different places that mine without cats would pass. I still plan on registering in my state of residence though because it is cheaper and there are less vehicle laws.

Yep, as long as it passes the OBD scan, you'll be fine.

HOWEVER - If you want to get technical, anything that modifies the factory emissions equipment in any way is an automatic failure. That's a federal law. Replacing the cats with HFCs would be a failure, or even moving the stock cats from their original location. Any of those would fail you on a visual inspection, but I've never seen them look at thing if it passes OBD, regardless.
