Well, I know that Silverado's around here are praised for having drum brakes, because of all the gravel roads in Canada. Since the back wheels always travel in the thrown debris area when driving on gravel its for brake longevity.

Gravel doesn't (or barely) affect a drum brake.
Disc brakes, which usually have better brake feel, get pounded out by gravel and debris, shortening their lifespan (usually to half or less then the front discs).

Makes sense for a work truck! (Although a factory option to use rear discs would be nice, aside from VortecMax Package)

I had drum brakes on my old truck.... the biggest problem I had is they rusted up on the inside and a quick visual inspection did not show anything wrong. However, I was driving with no rear brakes for several months because of it... They're good because they're cheap, bad because they're hard to visually inspect.
