The sound attenuation happens a few hundred RPM below and above the design point. It kills the whole drone range.

No they are not adjustable. To raise the target RPM the J-pipes would need to be shorter.

OK, I took my car to the shop today and had this mod made. Let me tell you folks, this is the REAL DEAL! It works beautifully! The peak range of my drone is GONE and the overall sound inside the car is substantially quieter at all RPM's.

I can not thank you guys enough for posting this mod, I was about to buy an entirely new exhaust system.

Here are a couple pics:

Congratulations!!!! It's awfully hard sometimes to take that step off into the unknown, but now you know the truth about the Helmholtz j-pipe mod and how well it works.

What kind/brand of mufflers are you using in your set-up?

No doubt about it, but I was resigned to replacing the exhaust anyway so I thought this was worth a try. Now I get the best of both worlds, a mean sounding exhaust and the ability to carry on a conversation while driving!

It's a JBA 3" competition exhaust with JBA 1 7/8" headers and high flow cats.

That would be two S pipes for SS! LOL! There wasn't room to fit a "J" shaped pipe in there with the muffler and I recall you or Roger mentioned that the shape doesn't matter, so S it was!

I just hope that this enthusiasm is highly contagious in this forum. There's a lot of folks still complaining about drone with all brands of exhaust systems, and you've just shown them that they, too, can have a great sounding experience with just a little thinking outside the "usual" box. Maybe if they see it coming from a couple of Camaro guys, they'll start j-ing and s-ing!!!

I see more clearly now:

Hey man, nice job on the "SS" pipes! Def needs to be a sticky thread, good info and proven technology!

Tough part will be finding a shop that could do this.
I was concerned about the pipe shape too, but the S pipe works great. The length is the critical dimension; mine is 2.25" x 28" which cleared my drone range which was 1700-2000 RPM.

Just call a few muffler shops and ask if they have the ability to make custom pipes (i.e., they need a pipe bender) and if they have an ASE certified mechanic. Then just take a couple pictures of the J-pipe/S-pipes from this thread an show the mechanic, he should be able to fix you up.

Nice job, Grinder!

Interesting interpretation of the shape, but if it fits, that rocks. I have noticed from the "under the rear" pics on this board that GM did not leave much room for extra plumbing on the rear of the zeta-II chassis.

Looks nice!
