Do people actually like the NPP sound?

I can appreciate the fact that it quiets down to the same sound level as any other stock car on the planet, but with the flaps open (fuse pulled on mine), it just sounds like shit. It sounds dirty, cluttered, and even raspy at times. It certainly doesn't sound like a proper aftermarket catback would on any other car.

I'm trying to figure out the right path to take on my car to help straighten out the sound. I've got all the main pulley/porting/injectors/LS9/intake/tune mods, but want to either do headers or stick with stock manifolds and add HF cats in the spring. I'm not trying to get any louder per se, but I want the sound quality to improve dramatically.

Maybe just do HF cats behind stock manifolds, X pipe and catback?

I'm with you. I really don't care for the stock exhaust sound at all. Removed the cats and kept all the rest stock and it makes it sound like total hammered shit with the flaps open IMHO. I ended up wiring the flaps shut just so I could stand it.

It sounds ok from the drivers seat - I can admit that. Have you ever heard it outside the car? Following behind it down the road?

I'm with you. The more I hear it, the less I like it. The popping and rasp are getting old. Get a video of which route you ultimately go with...

Bingo!! I rarely got on my 13 SC 1LE with Dynatech headers and HF cats because I was embarrassed of the sound. Idle and part throttle was great, but anything beyond that I wanted to sink into the seat and hide. I had an 05 GTO with headers, HF cats, LS3 top end, stock mid pipe and Kooks afterburners, that sounded amazing. If the Z sounds the same with Pfadt headers I'll slit my own wrist cause I'll be devastated. I hear Pfadt are supposed to help the sound so I'm crossing my fingers.

I think the sound is fine. It's quiet when you want it to be quiet and loud when you get into if. I had a highly modified NA 2SS. While I'll admit it sounded amazing compared to the Z, the problem was it was too loud. I found myself nervous to get on it because I was afraid every cop in the county would hear me.

I'm more concerned with actual performance. The stock exhaust sounds good enough for me.

American Racing Stainless headers with cats has an incredible sound IMHO.
I've had a ton of compliments. M2W quiets it down when needed...like when the wife
asks " Do you have the flaps open"? LOL, they're always open.

agreed...with no cats and headers with flaps open it is just plain obnoxious. If the tone was more mellow and less raspy, it would be fine. I can close the flaps at WOT via the ADM exhaust controller but the factory NPP exhaust leaves much to be desired. My friend has a CTSv with headers, hi flow cats, and corsa exhaust and his sounds much better.

sounds good to me. I asked the wife if mine sounded like that when I did a fly by, she answered with, kinda.... your supercharger makes more noise.

I modded to 640rwhp with engine work. Part of that was adding a set of Kooks and removing the cats. I think it sounds amazing. Flaps are open all the time. I've had people tell me they've followed me around town just to listen to it. Personally the popping, snapping and crackling coming out the back gives me wood.

Lol, this was the day I went to store her for the winter and I wanted to see if my intake made a big difference outside the car. She said yes haha
