Using tap-shift to brake..

I need some input from the car experts out there. I have found that I can brake with the transmission by tap-shifting down to first gear. It also gives a sweet rev while approaching a light.

Is this bad for the car? If not, it sure does sound good

Ive beeen using it since i got the car including on the track. Should be built to handle it, mines good. I agree with your impression of it. I have even had friends say I thought you had an auto.

The car is built to endure downshifting.

However, it is an automatic, and it's just putting unnecessary pressure on the driveline and transmission by downshifting, unless of course you are coming down a really steep grade. Then, it is useful to keep some of the heat off the brakes, especially if you have a few passengers in the car.

Brakes are cheaper than a transmission replacement.

I always use tapshift for both up-shifting and down shifting, the computer will not allow you to down shift at an unreasonable rpm also the car has rpm matching to help protect it. GM has many features in their tune to protect the driveline and I am confident they did not overlook this. With that said I usually do not down shift into first at the higher rpm's allowed as I find it a little bit to agressive for everyday use.

Sift into 1st @ 35 MPH for the strongest downshift.

I do it all the time
