If that's what he is implying he would be correct. Most "fully synthetic" oil is not fully synthetic. Most are group 4 synthetics. Only group 5 synthetics are true "fully synthetic" oils.

Anyways, I have heard all about this, still use Mobil 1 as that is what the car came with. Many say it isn't "fully synthetic" even though the containers claim they are. Whatever. |

This goes back to the groupings. US allows Group 3 oils to be marketed as synthetic because they go through an extra refining process. The US is the only country in the world that allows this, all other countries do not allow Group 3 oils to be sold as synthetic, only Group 4 and select Group 5 oils. Mobil 1 is a Group 5 oil and is allowed to be marketed and sold as a full synthetic oil everywhere in the world. The fact that Europe and Japan who are more strict on oil companies than the US allow Mobil 1 to be sold as a full synthetic should tell you something. |

Also that is very high mileage for a <=3 year old car IMO. Do you have a thread on the testing done?

Pennzoil Ultra rated number 1 and Mobil 1 rated number 3 in their tests with only a small difference between the two, Pennzoil Platinum wasn't tested. According to Pennzoil there is suppose to be a decent difference between their Ultra and Platinum. If that's the case, there is no way Platinum is "much better" than a oil that is almost on par with their top tier oil. |
