? about ticking sound w/ Long Tubes

If I get down on the side of the car where the cats are you hear a ticking sound, IMO it doesnt really sound like an exhaust leak, but one of my friends swears it is

Are there any specific symptoms of a Exhaust Leak?

How do I check for one?

I know the car is running rich because I have alot of build up at the tailpipes, but there does not appear to be any buildup at the connection points

Does anyone else have a similar sound with their LT's?

I dont know if this is relative or not, but I cleared my o2 sensor codes a while back, after about 3 weeks or so the light returned, so I ran the car with it on for another month or so. I again cleared the code, and this time it returned within 2 days.

I dont know if this is your problem however my 69 Camaro ( 396 bigblock ) with hooker supercomp longtubes has the same sound. I once thought there was a leak down below by the collector then when you get down and listen its like someone has a screw driver and it hitting the headers.

I asked a few people and heard the same thing from everyone

High compression header ping NORMAL

The sound you are hearing is the sonic pulse of each cylinder's exhaust stroke "pinging", or impacting on the side of the relatively thin wall of the header tubes. My 68 Camaro had this sound and I loved it! To me it sounded like a lot of steel shot bouncing off a steel plate, and had an almost hissss sound to it. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Inherently noisy valve train amplified by thin walled exhaust. Thick cast iron manifolds masks the sound, but once you have headers on there, tick tick tick. Mine does the exact same thing. My Silverado does the same thing. My Harley does the same thing. Although I recently solved my Harley (which use small block chevy roller lifters) tick with a set of better lifters.

IMHO the Gen IV motor family could use some more refinement in the valve train dept. In this day and age of advanced computer engineering, sound labs... is it too much to ask for lifters that don't tick?

If the aftermarket has a better lifter, I'll probably be swapping lifters some day in mine with a nice cam.

The exhaust pulse in the header tube is different, that is not an objectionable tick. The tick is clearance in the valve train. I could hear mine slightly when stock. As soon as I put the headers on, holy crap this is one ticky valve train.

Hey fellas, I had my car tuned today and the tuner said that for sure I have an exhaust leak.

How do I find it?

You should see carbon build up if there is a leak.. My car makes the same noise in the same location as you described, I would not worry about it. Just keep an eye out at all connection points to see if there's any black stains

Se the link above, I had this bigtime on my SRT8.

All this said, I'm getting LT's again. I can't leave that much easy power on the table...

Thanks guys, is there any other ways to check other than looking for the soot around the connection points?

I want to make sure
