L99 stock cam with Forced Induction
OK guys and gals, I apologize if this has been covered somewhere else but i'm on my lunch break and won't have much time to look it up anymore than I already have with no real answer yet. I have an L99 with some bolt ons right now. I am hoping to Get an LSA conversion early to mid next year. I have alway thought that the stock cam will work with forced induction. I have seen several comments that say to go ahead and replace the AFM lifters so I have no problem with that. Recently I read on a performance shops website that said if you get rid of AFM/DOD, you HAVE to install a different cam otherwise the engine will start misfiring. So my question is, If I go forced induction as well as replacing the AFM lifters, do I really have to have a different cam installed? Also, what price range should I expect to pay for Labor on the lifter install. I am located in Southwest Oklahoma if that helps any. The installation doesn't look too complex but i'm very short on time due to having a family and Going to a full time school/program. I'm sorry for the long post and Thanks for any input!

Yes your stock cam. I made 505 rwhp and 570 rwtq on 10lbs. A aftermarket cam will give you more power but it wil decrease boost. Yes you will need a aftermarket cam being that L99 lifters arent designed for non VVT cams...I paid roughly 2K for labor

Yes, your stock cam will work just fine with boost. Yes your stock cam will work once you remove the AFM lifters. Yes, VVT works too under boost. You will need to turn off AFM permanently via a tune once you replace the lifers or you will get a miss and other bad things. You will be getting a tune anyway once you boost, so turning off AFM in the program is just a checkbox for the tuner.
Removing VVT is a different discussion and will require a cam swap among other things.

I know AGP has done 4-5 bone stock L99 cars, and made 680-700rwhp. They cap them there because that is all the transmission will take. By the time you add headers, cam, lifters, labor, etc, you maybe better off just doing twins and making more power.

I'm L99 with SLP Blower. I didn't replace my lifters. Obviously the tuner tuned out the AFM. Car is running amazing with 7k since blower install.

Nick is right about the turbo for bigger numbers. I've done the LSA upgrade with VVT cam/lifters and heads. I personally love the kit and the performance. The kit matched my goals. You'll want to be sure where you want to end up and choose accordingly. If you're doing the install yourself, the LSA kit is not bad at all. I'm sure the turbo kits have plenty of example installs to review.
Pm me if you're curious about the L99 changes I did... -Don

Just rolled 85K miles on my stock L99 with a Procharger Doug Thorley tri-y's, bone stock that's driven daily. Finally got around to changing the original blower belt that had at least 70K miles on it. Made just under 500 rwhp before the headers, all work was done at Procharger.
