GM to Replace Supercharger and Extend Warranty on '12-'13 ZL1?

http://www.autoblog.com/2014/06/04/g...vy-camaro-zl1/

Has anyone heard about this or confirmed its validity? Sorry if it has already been addressed...

"According to a report from The Car Connection, GM has discovered a problem with the superchargers of the 6.2-liter V8s found in the Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 and the Cadillac CTS-V. Apparently, the issue rests around the internal bearing shaft grease, which can become contaminated (we aren't sure with what). If left unchecked, it'll first lead to a rattle at idle, which goes away under slight throttle. The real warning stage is when a high-pitched squeal develops, signaling that the bearing shaft has failed. Naturally, severe engine damage is the next step (although it's possible that the engine will also just refuse to turnover, although neither case is desirable).

According to TCC, GM will replace the superchargers on vehicles that have exhibited symptoms of bearing shaft failure free of charge. It will also, allegedly, be extending the warranty on all supercharged ZL1s and CTS-Vs to 10 years or 120,000 miles (whichever comes first), from the date of purchase. Officially, only 2009 to 2013 CTS-Vs and 2012 to 2013 ZL1s are suffering from this issue."

Confirmed... Letter will go out to owners explaining risk of failure. Although the way you have described it or wherever you got that explanation is not the way I read it or how the problems has been documented on this forum. It relates to the coupler..

General Motors has discovered a problem with the supercharged 6.2-liter LSA V-8s fitted to certain versions of the Cadillac CTS-V and Chevrolet Camaro ZL1. The affected models are all 2009-2013 CTS-Vs and all 2012-2013 Camaro ZL1s.

According to the automaker, the engine's supercharger may not be functioning properly, causing the unit to develop a noticeable rattle noise at idle. The noise will normally go away when the engine revs start to rise, but the problem, if left unresolved, may lead to contamination of the internal shaft bearing grease and cause the bearing to squeal over time. This could lead to the bearing overheating, which in turn could cause the engine to seize or simply fail to start.

General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] dealers will replace the supercharger at no charge. As The Car Connection points out, this is a significant savings considering the fact that the supercharger alone is $2,095 and labor runs anywhere from 5 to 7.5 hours to do the job, according to GM's parts & labor guide.

Owners also receive a Special Coverage Adjustment for the problem. This special coverage covers the condition described above for a period of 10 years or 120,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the date the vehicle is sent in to receive the new supercharger, regardless of ownership.

This happened 2 weeks ago.... Here is the TSB number and title...

#13313: Special Coverage Adjustment - Supercharger Warranty Extension - (May 22, 2014)

-------------

Also, there is a clause that people can file aftermarket claim if repaired outside of GM.

Ok what about us guys who have modded vehicles? Is there a prevention for this? I remember reading here that the issue is the spring loaded snub mount that has been replaced in the 2014 models? What do those run for? My car is at Jannetty's right now and Tim is a super cool guy I have to ask him while it's in the middle of a 100whp upgrade.

If you google the supercharger couplers there are a large number of complaints going back to when the this group of cars were new. Many owners were complaining that the couplers were rattling at idle. Many had wear of the couplers in short order. Evidently the couplers have springs that compress and release at idle and create the rattle. GM said until now no problem but I have to give them credit that they are now covering. Looks like new CEO is catching up on all the past problems and taking responsibility for repairs, a good change.

Other makes/models that use similar superchargers use different couplers. I have heard there superchargers running and they are very quiet. My car is OK though.

I will be looking for letter and will be very happy to receive.

This was a simple decision that should have been made years ago as this problem goes back to Cadillac when they started with this same Eaton SC. It's a complete assembly from Eaton and they should have been forced to step up. Maybe the new CEO is shaking up the old lazy guard.

Yes, it's true. We just had the supercharger replaced on our '09 CTS-V.

In our case, the noise happened at light acceleration at lower rpms. Sounds like spark knock, but isn't. After they replaced the blower, the noise went away.

It affects '09-'13 LSA engines. Apparently the remedy was in place for 2014 production.

The guy above(ZMEnow) stated that all 2012-2013 ZL1's were effected. Whether that is accurate....I couldn't say.

http://www.motorauthority.com/news/1...aro-zl1-models

For further information you can contact GM at 1-800-458-8006. You can also contact your local dealer with your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) to determine if your vehicle is affected.

According to this, certain VINs affected??? Why I asked.

I suspect the warranty issue relates to the bearing going dry and not the coupler. That makes more sense to me.
