Wheel bearings/hub bolt size and length

I am building up a rear cradle complete with differential, suspension everything to the brake rotors new to install into my car in one complete unit drop old install the new with very little downtime. Just install torque whatever needs to be torque tightened etc. so I got everything except differential and wheel hubs out of a z28 car. Came with majority of hardware as well as arms shocks etc. I didn’t get the wheel hubs or the hardware that goes with them. I have now acquired wheel hubs to install and need to know what size and length the 3 bolts are to purchase new ones. Really don’t want to tear into my car right now to figure out bolt sizes and would rather avoid having to remember to pull mine and install into the new unit when it comes time to install. Can anyone help me out with bolt size and length? Maybe someone parting a car can send me bolts to front and rear hubs on the cheap?

I believe they're standard 8 mm x 1.25 bolts--not sure on the length, though. Once you figure out the length you can probably get some grade 10.9 from a local hardware store for less than someone's take-offs.

Thank you I’ll see if I can locate a few bolts to try. I think my local hardware store only does grade 8 don’t recall seeing grade 10 anyplace might have to order them online. But at least I got a starting point now

10.9 is a grade of metric hardware (like the inch system's grades 5 and 8) , along with 12.9, 8.8, and 5.8. It'll be embossed on the hex.

I don't recall mine being very long, as the hub flange isn't especially thick.

Ty they ended up being m12 bolt 1.75 threads. 35mm long (tad over 1.25”) bolts. Ordered 10.9 grade ones. Thought I’d update the thread in case someone looks for this info later.

Great! I was recalling a 13 mm head for some reason, which is usually for an 8 mm screw. The length makes sense. I know the hub is only 10-ish mm thick but the knuckle is much thicker.

I looked at the back of the knuckle of the rear in my car I didn’t measure up with a socket but stock bolts didn’t look much bigger head to me then 13mm. So you may be correct. I’ll see what the bolts are when they arrive in the mail. I did manage to find a bolt that fit threads rummaging around my garage and it’s definately m12x1.75 threads that fit in the wheel bearings. Found a similar size bolt and you were correct looks like 1.25” is pretty darn close to filling out the wheel bearings holes. 35mm equates to 1.37795“ so that should do the trick. I also got z28 wheel hubs so idk if the bolts for those are bigger or not but I never read anything in my research that indicated that they were.

If you’re going to ask for an answer and find the answer. You. As well update the post with the answer. If not for your own future reference but others as well.

Amen brother!

The heads on the stock bolts are 13mm, but they have a pretty serious flange. The SS, ZL1 and Z28 all use the same hub bolts. The hubs used in the ZL1 and Z28 have a thicker stud flange and stronger bearings. All are interchangeable, but using an SS hub in a higher power car would likely create durability issues.

Do you know how thick the stud flange is compared to the ss?

Ok cool I ordered mine from rock auto under z28 but I noticed they listed under all 3 models so I been curious if they the better ones or not. They showed up when I plugged in the z28 part number. They were the higher dollar gm units. Bit the part numbers I believe changed as the part number I bought don’t seem to match any of the #s I found here even ss ones. So I been a little skeptical of which ones I actually got.

Sorry, completely forgot about this. ZL1 flange is .475. ZL1 and Z28 use the same hubs. They are made by SKF, but there are a bunch of SKFs floating around that are clearanced for some reason and selling for about $50. When you rotate them by hand, you can feel a bunch of sticking points.
