It all depends on your power level.

I hope not to sound too much an idiot here...what do you mean by 'lock it in' ? Like drop it into a specific gear suited for whatever the roll is starting at?

That depends on how slow the car in the other lane is.

I still think drag strips should have chicane at the end of the quarter.

I race my A6. I love the launch control (brake and gas). I've tried to paddle shift but can't do it as well as it does on it's own.

Roll racing paddle to the gear you want to start in, once you're WOT let it shift on its own. From a dig just let it shift on its own from what I've heard, i have an m6 so no personal experience. Launch control may help but i think feathering the throttle is more effective to control wheel spin.

Does it automatically go back into sport mode?

Get a trans brake and a high stall for a dig. Roll is not very common around here.

No, well not the 2010 at least. The newer model years had some upgrades to the TCM and I think they could hold down one or both of the paddles for a few seconds to go back into whatever mode the gear selector is in, leaving TapShift/manual mode. I also think newer models could enter manual mode temporarily while in drive, but I am not sure on this.

Once I am in TapShift mode I have to drop the gear selector back to drive and then back to M (Sport Mode) to let it shift on it's own with the harder shifts, or I can leave it in drive for lighter shifts. So basically for my model year the only way to leave manual/TapShift mode is to move the shifter out of Sport mode.
