2013 2SS L99 A6 with lifter problem??

I thought the AFM lifter issue was limited to 2010 models and that GM introduced new lifters to fix this issue. Since my car is a 2013, how is it I seem to be having this problem?

I have 10k miles on the car and in the last couple of months, I am getting the following noise on startup (after the car has sat at least 6-8 hours). The following video isn't my car, however, the 2-3 second ticking/sewing machine noise you hear is exactly what I am getting after the car sits for 6-8 hours (it doesn't happen every single time, but often enough).

How does a 2013 get stuck with the 2010 bad lifters? And what happens if I can't get them to fix it? Will this result in long term engine damage?

That video isn't long enough or clear enough for me to hear any ticking.

The ticking/fluttering sound is over by the end of the video...it only lasts about 2 seconds....I guess it's more obvious to me in the video since it's the exact same noise I hear live.

On the contrary, that short duration ticking is exactly the problem! That's what my 2010 sounded like until I had the lifters upgrades per the TSB. A very familiar sound that made me cringe and now is gone.

BTW, why does your 2013 have pre-2013 wheels?

As explained in my original post, the video is not of my car, but is a video posted elsewhere on this site. It just happens to show exactly what I am hearing on some cold start ups.

OK, sorry, I missed that.

Puzzled as you are about this occurring on a 2013!

My Camaro is a 2011 with almost 60,000 miles. It's at the dealer right now getting the lifters replaced under warranty.

Yup should still be under warranty. Take it in. They'll need it for a few days to diagnose it. Today it will be 8 days that they've had my car.

That video above is mine. I had the lifters replaced and it resolved the issue you heard in the video. I too thought they wold have had it fixed by 2013 but if you hear that sound I'd suggest getting the lifters replaced. It would cost close to $2000 to repair outside of warranty.

I think the TSBs associated with this problem do not list model year 2013...which means they'll probably say something like this is normal, knowing dealerships...then what?

Does anyone know what model year the TSB on this applies to? I know it's 2010 and I might have seen an updated one that had 2011 on there...something tells me 2013 is not on that TSB...

I don't have the TSB off hand but I did have issues with the dealer being unable to reproduce the issue. So what I did was get a couple of good recordings on my phone. Then when I went to pick up my car I asked to speak with the mechanic. I then talked with him about the issue and showed him the videos. He then said that he'd seen enough and had the parts ordered. I was without my car for a few days but it was worth the time and effort as the sound was pretty terrible to listen to almost every morning.

That being said it's possible that your have a newer lifter that happens to be defective.

I wonder if this problem is more prevalent with those who tune out AFM or who run something like the Range AFM delete (like I do). Running these lifters in 8-cylinder mode all the time is not how they were designed to be used. I'm going to take the Range unit out for a while and see if that makes a difference. I'm sure it won't, but it's worth a shot.

Mine had the issue prior to any tune. I'd probably have it looked at sooner rather than later as I've heard the noise could be piston slap and could cause issues/damage. I'm not sure how true it is but still I think it's worth the effort.

Mine isn't tuned and no Range. But I do plan on getting it. I also plan on a LS3 swap once the powertrain warranty expires.
