How can I get this Sound?

Lets face it..our SS mufflers have a hollow sound, probably because our mufflers have no packing in them. How can I get my SS to have this Full Rich beautiful sound??

Buy a big displacement late 60's-ealrly 70's vintage muscle car??

I caught a glimpse of Mecum today & always enjoy it...man I love the old stuff. They had a really cool 67 Camaro that was spiffy. It was Nothing in terms of pure big muscle like that 70, but it did lay the groundwork for our 50th's.

That's not a 1970 original engine.

What was really nice about that ride? It is a 2 door hardtop. Four windows down with no B-pillar. You really have to own one to know how special a hardtop is to drive. Owned 4 and really miss a hardtop. I think Mercedes is the only one now making a 2 dr hardtop.

Switching to an H-pipe would likely help a little.

small block V8s don't (can't) sound like higher displacement big block V8s.

I like the sound of my 17 SS. Best of all worlds. There are times when I do not want my car to sound loud and obnoxious like my 70 Chevelle when I was a kid. It was loud and sounded like I was ready to race someone at any minute.

I really enjoy being able to cruise through the neighborhood and not piss off the neighbors. Than once I hit the open road hear that fantastic sound coming from the tail pipes. Maybe I grew up a little. Bottom line... this car sounds fantastic and its there when you want it and gone if you don't. YMMV

Peace,

You need a big block 454 crate engine to do that.

Like others have said, that sound is intrinsic to a big block Chevy. There are some really good exhaust people left out there that can steer you in the direction of a certain sound, recommend specific types and brands of mufflers, etc, but you end up with certain sounds you can't fake. That's one of the reasons musclecars sell so well at auctions.

I was fortunate enough growing up to have a friend who owned a real 1969 Z/28 with the screaming, solid-lifter 302 small block. And he would even occasionally let me drive it. I loved it, and always wanted one of my own.

Driving my '16 SS reminds me A LOT of that car, and that motor. The LT1 and the DZ302 are both high compression, free revving, hot motors. They even both have that extra valvetrain noise, even though the LT1's is from the fuel pump mechanism instead of solid lifters.

It doesn't have to be a big block. 327s, 340, 350s 289s all have a full rich tone. I thinks the packed mufflers they used.

Really? Here is a 327 small block. Can't tell the difference from a small block or big block.
