Cylinder Head Intake Runner Dimpling

Just watched the below video and first time I’ve heard of dimpling the the intake runner like a golf ball, said Dyno proven results. So scroll towards the end and you’ll see it.

Just my opinion, mostly myth and theory. What really works is what the pro race engine builders do everyday. You can look at what shops like Frankenstein or Reher Morrison or Musi or ECR or gazillion others on how they finish their ports... I can't think of a single one I've seen make their ports look like a golf ball. Most common is just a slightly rough burr bit finish.

David Reher from Reher Morrison is one the brightest racing engine minds out there. If you really want to see speed secrets, he spells out his list of important things in a cylinder head port here. And I don't see dimpling.

https://rehermorrison.com/product/bu...tips-and-info/

Great reading for anyone getting into engine building his 1-100 tips. And their paper copy engine building book is worth it's weight in gold.

On intake port wall finish, the goal of the finish is to avoid atomized fuel sticking to the walls as liquid (falling out of atomization). The traditional burr bit finish does that just fine. Concentrate on the proper port shape, and don't go mirror polishing it. Spend time on that long list of other more important stuff Reher listed out.

And if your fuel is having a falling out of atomization problem... some other big problem is going on. Junk... fuel, injector, carb... If someone did happen to mirror polish an intake port and was using junk fuel with a junk injector/carburetor... I bet dimpling the ports would help. But as a bandaid.

I had those from GPI with my heads. They stopped doing that — didn’t see a big difference...

Not sure if the intake would be much better...

I talked to a guy who has a program that can do that to the heads. He said it's mostly for show, it does nothing to help flow, it just looks cool.

I didn't watch the video no time at the moment but the only dimpling I have even done is on a chevy 350 intake and block on the ends where you run a bead of RTV this DOES help make a good seal and gives RTV extra grip
