Question Roll cages?

Would someone please explain the differences in roll cages? There are 5, 6 and 8 point cages, right? HOW are they different, and what purposes do they serve? Which are welded into the car? Which requirements must they satisfy?

Points are how many spots the roll bar/cage is tied to the chassis. Obviously the more points you have the more complex and costly it will be. Also the faster you want to go the more points you will need.
The least you can have and be legal to race is a 5 point (depends on where you race and how fast you want to go), which is the regular hoop, the two rear tie ins and the driver door bar. This is what i had in my 98 SS daily driver. It's the least restrictive because there is no door bar for the passenger side.

Faster than 11.5 you get into the cage roll bar requirements. The cages run around two grand and up. You should order a 2011 NHRA rule book.

You don't buy a roll bar/cage for how fast you are going, you buy one for how fast you ultimately want to go. Like Silver2SSRS6spd said, get a rule book and it will tell you EXACTLY what you need top run how fast. Once you know what you need you can start asking for recommendations.

There are driveshaft safety loops, scatter shields and lots of other things that you will need as you get faster. Racing ain't cheap!

Well, lessee. There's a KB twin screw blower, ported heads, a blower cam, Borla LT headers with no cats, Borla exhaust, an Adam Montague at ST Motorsports custom tune, 18"drag radials on Corvette rims (soon to be replaced with 17" drag slicks on Bogart wheels with Bogart skinnies up front), BMR drag suspension all around, third stage dual disc ceramic clutch, rebuilt and reinforced 6060 tranny (I broke the original output shaft by pushin' it a bit too hard), driveshaft loop, shift light, et cetera. I'm planning on puttin' a 5 gallon ice box in the trunk to help cool the blower. The bottom end is still stock. I'm runnin' 8 or 10lbs boost depending on the pulley. It's gettin' 625 hp at the rear wheel on California's shit, 91 octane pump gas. It runs a good deal harder on 110 octane juice...

Does that answer your question?

That sound like sage advice, although I still need more info...

A 5 or 6 point roll bar will do you fine. And don't forget that you will also need a 5 point harness and a scatter shield for that trans.

2010-2011 Camaro NHRA LEGAL 11.50 to 10.0 Roll Cage

Ivas,
It sounds like your combo is really starting to develop and with 10s in the future, a cage is mandatory or you will get booted from the track. In fact, runnning at 11.2 right now without one is illegal and in all reality, not safe if something were to happen.

Some critical and important points to make on roll cages for the 11.50 to 10.0 as per NHRA rules:
  • Minimum requirement of 5 pt cage
  • The cage can be a bolt in. No welding is required to the frame(9.99 or faster an 8 point cage is required welded in)
  • Minimum required tubing for NHRA is 1.75" x .120" walled for a mild steel bar.
  • Main hoop and down bars must be welded together and CANNOT BE PINNED!! The main hoop section must all be one welded peice.
  • Door bars are the only bars that can be pinned
When going 9.99 or faster, a fully welded in 8pt cage is required. This is the cage that includes a standard 6 point welded in, plus 2 diagonal mounted bars from the shoulder bar behind the seats to the trans tunnel, plus a halo bar with welded down bars that come down by the dash and attaches into the front door bar mounts.

With those rules out there, its clear that a lot of the so called NHRA legal bars are not up to spec. What you dont want to have happen is to install an expensive peice of jewelry that'll get you booted off the track. Do it once, do it right, and have the confidence that your purchase was a sound decision for both your wallet and your safety.

We offer the perfect solution for someone who is looking for a bolt in, fully NHRA legal 11.50 to 10.00 roll cage at nearly half the cost of a custom cage. Best part, you can install it yourself on a saturday and still have time to make it to the track that same night.

Features
  • NHRA LEGAL 10.0-11.49 bolt in roll bar! You don't pass tech, we BUY THE BAR BACK!!
  • NHRA LEGAL Door swing out. Door swing out is completely removable for street driving and easily installs in seconds at the track!
  • NHRA LEGAL Bolt in seat belt mounts
  • Mild Steel or Chromoly Mandrel Bent Tubing. MS tubing is 1.75” x .134 wall dimension. This tubing exceeds requirements in the NHRA rule book. CM is 1.75 x .083.
  • CAD engineered and precision welded robotically
  • Each roll bar contains a manufactured chassis tag including date and serial number to prove authenticity and certification.
  • Completely 100% removable and 100% welded. This bar comes ready to bolt in, fully powder coated!. When reselling the vehicle, removal is simple and you can even resell the roll bar!
  • 5 Point roll bar includes driver side swing out door bar only. Add Passenger door bar for a 6pt!
  • If you break the 9.99 mark, we sell an add on kit to convert your existing bar to an 8pt!
  • Factory seat remains fully adjustable. Custom designed for each application, these Roll Bars allow for complete seat adjustment front to rear!
  • Custom engineered to aesthetically follow factory interior lines and flow.
  • Full detailed instructions with pictures, and all hardware included.
Bottom line, if you dont pass tech, we buy the bar back. PERIOD!

As lewylew said, we are having a group buy going on right now! Its a great opportunity to get into a legit cage at a super low price!
