Documentation value?
There is a lot of conversation about low-priced Z/28's but the conversation never seems to include the value of documentation such as build sheets, factory autographed built sheets, ordering documentation, original Certificate of Authenticity from the factory, etc., etc.
Is this stuff worth a premium on the asking price, and if so, how much? |

Today it is really just nice to have - in 20 years it will be really nice to have and further document the history. I would say if there is a premium it is that car sells before a comparable car at similar price but not much of a premium, especially in light of it is still a new car.
Plus not everyone got the same information - in my case - original owner - I got window sticker and copy of MSO when I bought out of state. Did not get the Chevy package showing me as original owner - by the time I bought it they just were no longer sending those out as they were on to the new gen 6 ZL1. Cars that might get premium - Two Indy 500 pace cars one actually used in race and the other one. One was sold at auction by GM with documentation and a trip to Indy 500 this year and it still only brought high $50k range - that was a good buy for sure long term. Then for 2014 - last one built and possibly VIN 427. 2015 maybe VIN 427 and first and last one built. Otherwise it will likely be base on color with silver the rarest, then grey, then red, then white and the black. No AC cars even more rare, but nobody wants to own a driver without AC, so unless a track car only that is not a good bet. Good luck finding what you want! You will love it - I am local to you and would be happy to show you mine if you want, just PM me. If your buying as a used car for that purpose nobody cares. If your buying to invest you have to have it. Bought new and I have the WS and CoA in my name. Other than that, I got nothing, not sure what's missing other than a buildsheet. Also, keep in mind, cars from yesterday needed docs to authenticate what they are. Today you don't need that, check the VIN at the the dealer and you'll get more info than you'll ever want.
Point is - value will not be effected on today's cars like it was on a 69 Z/28. Docs on that car with original everything vs a non documented non original everything Z/28 is around $20-30k on the same quality car. Spread will not be that big on these Z/28 just over docs. |

My build sheet was taped inside the trunk. I am a nut for paperwork, so it would be worth more to me. I am still working on trying to get he CoA. The vin on our cars designates Z/28, so not as important as a 69 Z/28.

With the set vin sequence, we wont really need documents. Ive been checking out the new ZL1, they dont have sequential VINs.

Do you have the window sticker and what condition is it? Will be one of my first questions when I get to seriously looking. The more doc, the better in my eyes.
I still have the window sticker of my lease returned 13 1LE. If I knew who owned it now, I'd see if they were interested. |

I know this is a bit of a dick swing....but a great guy here on C5 made this happen for my '14 #059. Everyone who worked on building the car signed a factory pic. Thanks Mike.

I have every single thing that came with my car except the plastic cover for the Steering Wheel. My dealer did a very limited PDI and I took the car to my shop and did the rest. Will it add value? Who knows??? But in some cases it has been a make or break deal on some rare cars. Back when I restored my Dad's '57 Thunderbird with all original parts hunted down from across the country I had people offering money for the factory original boxes. I'll leave this problem/bonus to my beneficiary...I will always have my Z. |
